VP44 Shaft stuck
SEmerson...
Try and locate a puller that has a bearing on the end of the screw. They are made for the really tuff jobs.
Short of that, put a lubricant with silicone or molydamindisufide (sp) on both the threads of the screw and on the end of the screw. That will help reduce the friction forces.
After the screw gets good and tight, us a 1 or 2 lb ball peen hammer and just patiently keep tapping on it. Tighten up a bit, and pound some more.
The shaft has got to come out. But you know that already.
One thought. . Make double sure you have removed the support bracket on the bottom of the VP44. It goes down to the lower end of the gear case.
My boy over looked that while trying to take his off in the dark. Makes for a real hard removal.
One other thought. Go to a GM parts counter. Ask for their brand of Rust Disolver/Penetrant. It is far better than anything else made. If their is "any" chance of getting a lubricant between the shaft and the gear, that stuff will do it. Spray it on and let it soak for 15 minutes, give it another shot and let that soak. Then go back to pounding on it.
Luck to you.
