I just had my 2nd VP44 failure. The pump had 2 broken studs and 2 missing nuts. So yes it was falling off the motor. I know it was properly installed and torqued 20k miles ago. But I have another problem, There is a crack in the P/S housing bwetween the pump and timing cover, is it possible the pump rattling around shook the VP44 loose? There are no leaks so I wasnt worried about it until now. Anybody had this housing break? If so how hard is it too change?

how about a pic w/ the crack? I'm already confused and wondering where it is. Assuming the '99 and y2k are similar... the vacuum pump bolts to the engine... an aluminum bracket bolts to the vacuum pump and finally... the p/s pump bolts to the bracket... seems like the p/s would be clear of the VP44. If all 3 parts need to come out be disassembled, reassembled, etc. , its a few hour job... I did it to replace a leaking seal on the vacuum pump and disassembled the vacuum pump and replaced the seal... all told that repair was ~5 hours with breaks for lunch, dinner, and heat (did it in a partially heated garage in December).

If the vacuum pump is the problem ~$605 (fleet cost) @ Cummins, $1100 from DC, $444 @ NAPA. If the connecting bracket is the problem I'm not sure where to get one. P/S try NAPA.

bracket

I could try and get a pic but it is definitly not in a highly photogenic local. I am refering to the alum? conecting bracket..... I had hoped for steel but I would have to check with a magnet to find out for sure. It is cracked right behind the ends of the bolts coming in from the engine side, but these look like it would require disasembly of the timing case fir removal. I considered trying to spot weld it on the truck but would be hard to get a good bead running around. Besides the heat would probably cook all the seals. I have to go see the Cummins people for a few parts related to my recent pump failure anyway so I will check pricing on the bracket.

There should be a steel bracket that bolts to the back of the VP44 pump and anchors it to the engine block. Without this bracket being secured it will loosen or break the mounting studs on the engine cover. I've seen the weld break on the metal bracket but it's hard to see how the how the pump could have damaged the P/S or vacumn pump. Please let us know what you find, interesting. Larry

Findings

The bracket was in place on the back of the VP when last installed. Still was falling off engine. Cummins dealer let it go and warrantied it with cummins. I spent some time at my local dealer tonight, got the line that had broken and checked to see what the part is that is in front of P/S pump. Looks like the vacuum pump tail housing itself is cracked. I thought it was an attaching bracket between the two. Kinda pricey at 625. 00 Think I will try to disassemble it and get it welded eventually. Dont see how this could have loaded the injection pump as the vacuum pump looks supported. Maybe a fluke but I will keep an eye on the VP attaching hardware.
