Archived VP44 coded 216; Diesel Shop thinks replacement needed.

I am going to have my VP44 replaced Tuesday at my local Diesel Shop and wanted to ask one final question. In late winter the coupling broke between the Vacuum pump and the Power Steering Pump and I had to replace both units. When I replaced them I did not turn the engine but had some trouble sliding the Vacuum pump back into the housing where the gear meets the other gears(sorry for lack of details on gears). I was wondering if the vacuum pump gear meshes with the VP44 gear and could the timing of the VP44 have been inadvertently affected by the VP44 rotating on me while trying to install the vacuum pump. Since I have not seen how the gears intermix does anyone know or think this might be the real problem behind the P0216's, hard starting and dead pedal after startup?

Found The Information

I found a thread that was posted by "Texas Diesel" which showed the timing gears and by the visual you could tell that the Vacuum and VP44 are driven by the same gear. This confirms that the Vacuum pump can be put in without regard of alignment to the VP44 as these two unit do not mesh gears at all.
