I did some work on my 99 today and forgot to plug the auxilliary lift pump in. The truck idled for 30 seconds to a minute with no fuel pressure before I realized it. How long does it take to damage the VP44?

That should be no problem. Some go for hundreds, even thousands of mile before they realize the lift pump is dead and the VP survives(like my father-in-law who refused to get a gauge). Thirty seconds at idle is nothing to worry about. If it did kill it, it was near death anyway. Oh yeah, FIL has a gauge now.

I found out that my lift pump was dead when I first put gauges on. Who knows how long it had been dead, and I had to do a 100 mile drive later that day. That was 20,000 miles ago and it's still going strong. Idling it for a minute won't kill it.
