Archived truck quit, fuel problem

I'll try and keep it as brief as possible. The last month or so I've been losing power. My RAM is a 98 24v with 160K on it. It seemed like a possble lift pump problem and I was planning on replacing it when I replaced the fuel filter. Last Fri. eve. (before the pump and filter replacement) my truck would die at a stoplite and I could restart it and I managed to limp it home. I replaced the pump and filter, purged all the lines up to the vp44. I tried starting it and got nothing, it would crank good but no fire. I cracked 3,4,5 injectors and cranked it several times for 15 to 20 sec. and no fuel at the injectors. I tried locating the bleed valve on the pump and couldn't find it.



What about checking the pump relay, ECM (Idon't have a scanner), etc.



My local dealer is a joke and is always trying to get in your pockets. My Cummins shop is about 85 miles away.



Any suggestions?

First you need to find a way to check youor fuel pressure to see if the lift pump is fried. If you have fuel pressure then it ismost likely the vp-44. The cheapest place we have found vp-44's is www.cumminsstuff.com They have them for around $700-800 and they are new not remanufactured pieces
 
Did you loosen the fuel filter and bump the starter? This will tell you if there is fuel pressure. Won't tell you how much but if is has a little it should start.

I bet both the lift pump is bad and it took the vp44 with it.



BTY, my 02 with the lid loose for the filter, it leaks like niagra falls!!
 
Do you have a check engine light? If so you need to find out what the code(s) are before you can solve your problem. Since your truck is a '98. 5, you have an inlet and outlet banjo fitting on top of your fuel filter canister. Loosen the outlet fitting and bump the starter(don't start) this will run the lift pump for 45 seconds or so(should be able to hear pump running). If you don't get a healthy fuel stream from the banjo fitting, you have a bad lift pump.



If you have a check engine light, you could take it to a local parts store. Some of them, such as Auto Zone, will read trouble codes for you at no charge.
 
lmills & fox --- When I opened the banjo fittings at the filter and the vp44 and bumped the starter I was getting a good fuel flow, so I think the lift pump is good (with new pump installed). Thanks for the parts website.





Riflesmith --- When the engine was stalling I would get an intermittent "check engine" light. It would come on when it stalled then go out after it started. I'm still working on getting the codes read. I'm familiar with autozone's check service , but the closest one is about 40 miles.

Thro just a couple things your way (Out of a hundred anyway)

Could be a crank sensor. If the engine doesn't know its turning the VP wont add fuel. However you need to pull codes. The VP priming takes a looooong time on some trucks. I have done filter changes back when the truck was stock and once I just simply hit the key and she fired right up no questions asked. Other times I have had to crack lines , bump and bump and then she would run.

Also check the fuel injection pump RELAY!

Voltage Too High

CKP sensor voltage input above the maximum acceptable

voltage.
 
vp-44 pump

Did you have fuel coming out of the injector lines? Have done mine and fuel to the top of the fuel filter and then out to the fuel lines at the side. Hope this helps . Never leave home without the maintance manual you may need it . :D
 
Try send a pm to Reb. b , I think he had something similar to that. It was something like a wiring harness had a bad connection.
