Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) VP44 fuel leak

I just installed a new vp44 and it is leaking fuel from between the engine and pump flange. By looking at the old pump I found that the only place it could be coming from is two metal ball bearing type things on the pump. They are behind the o-ring so it would have to come out as opposed to leaking into the gear case and mixing with the oil. Has any one else seen this problem? I guess I'll have to replace it again.
