2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Mileage on stock Michelin tires?

Got to wondering what the ratio of original pumps still running is to those who have had to replace them.

This is Multiple choice in case you have (or had) more than 1 truck.

Bought the truck used with 59000 miles, added FP gauge - had to replace lift pump. VP44 died at 80000. Still ran, but "loped" at idle until the truck was fully warmed up. Mech at dealer said the one he pulled off was a remanufactured one (had reman tag on it), so it had been replaced before.

JerryTurbo,

Wow! is all I can say. I think this is going to be an interesting poll as it gets some more input logged.

CumminsPuller

Your's isn't any slouch either.

Betcha both of you guys do good maintenance schedules and keep things clean.

John,

I do keep up the maintenance on the truck pretty meticulously (sp?) and always keep the engine washed and as clean as possible (when I have time). Now as far as the outside of the truck... ... That is another story. I had an EZ on the truck from about 100K on. But I did not hot dog it while towing and I still had the stock transmission until 198K so I had to be careful not to fry it. And the stock transmission lasted that long even while towing 95%-98% of the time with loads anywhere from 8K to 40K.

Interesting note though. I only used fuel additives once in a while. Majority of the time I did not use them.

I think it's like most any issue, you hear more about the problems multiple times than you hear about the successes even once! Knock on a little wood, I'm watching the VP threads fairly close...

I voted, mine is tapped and original.

Been Tapped since 4,000 miles. 51,000 miles now.

Lift pump is slowly getting tired. With the comp on 2-2 I can drop pressure to 10. I have a booster pump and it is ready to go on.

At 89,6 the 5th VP44 went in my 99. I have been waiting for the warranty to run out so I could up the horse power. I have played with an EZ some. The warranty is now gone but the way this thing eats VP44's I am not sure what to do with it. I do have a fuel pressure gauge and when the lift pump gets weak I have been able to get it replaced. It is on its 5th lift pump also.

93,800 miles original VP and second Lift Pump. Been tapped since around 40,000 miles and usually is on level 5x5. I keep my fuel tank above 1/4 at all times and usually fill back up just below 1/2. Some people say they run the tank down to nothing and have never had a problem so who knows what is best.

I think if I had eaten 5 VP's in 90k I'd want to find the problem, could it be the fuel source? Local fueling station with a lot of crap in the fuel? Algae in the tank? Someone pee-ing in your tank at work? GTX, I would be curious to know if the failures were electrical or mechanical? Do you know? If all electrical then maybe there is stray voltage spiking the electronics in the pump or a bad ground somewhere. I think I would've lemon lawed that puppy! Sorry for the bad luck!

YUP - gotta be a contributing factor with multiple failures...

Had a Comp on mine almost since new, now over 25,000 miles - pierced wire, tow medium weight 5er, ALWAYS use lubricity additives, MUCHO fuel filtering, plus pusher pump - looking for a million miles on this pump! ;) :D

TT1, I don’t think I have an algae problem. I change the fuel filter about every 7k miles and there is not any crap in the canister and filters look good. I also use power service fuel additive on every fill up. I do run the tank down until the low fuel light comes on. Reading stuff here lately I guess I will stop that.

In Colorado, you have to start lemon law proceedings within the first year of ownership, at least that’s the way it was in 2000. The first pump died a year and a half after I bought it. I looked into arbitration also but don’t remember why that would not work either. I have had a lot of trouble with this thing but was glad to have the warranty and some decent dealers to work with.

It got so bad for awhile the service writer could write the service order without me telling him my address and phone number and the guy taking me home did not need directions.

I do think it is an electrical problem. I have greased almost every connector I can. That fixed the rump rump at startup for a while but now that is starting again. I had a set of Ray’s banjo bolts in for awhile trying to see if it needed more fuel but the last pump still died with them in.

As far as someone peeing in tank goes, I don’t think so. It does not go to work very often and I can see it all day. It also has a locking cap on it for what that’s worth.
