If a VP44 is on the fritz, will my FP gauge reflect any changes in fuel pressure or is the gauge only associated with the LP? If not, in what ways do problems with a VP44 manifest themselves? How might I know if I should have concerns?

The first indication that I got was the engine would "surge" when cold at idle only - like a big block v8 with a large cam. It would go away when the truck warmed up. It went away on its own for almost a year, then started again and got worse. Took it in and the tech hooked up the Cummins tester to the pump - found an intermittent fault.

The fuel pressure gauge would go up and down in pressure when the truck would surge, other than that there was no change in readings.

Have you cycled you key three times (leaving the key on the third) and looked for codes on the odometer?

If not it's a good place to start.

No codes. I'm quite sure my LP is going south because it is intermittently giving me below normal FP readings. I'm trying to bide time until I can get the RASP system (or other aftermarket system) installed and I want to make sure I'm not having VP44 issues in the mean time. The truck just seems sluggish. Even my wife, who hardly ever drives my truck, took a trip last weekend and made a comment that when she was passing people, the truck didn't seem to want to GO. Not sure what could be causing this recent decline in performance.

Mine was doing that. Also, if you listened real close, the diesel knock had taken on a high pitched metallic ping. I likened it to preignition knock from a too lean mixture.

Changing the fuel filter resolved the issue for me.
