I am not sure if this is the right place to post this thread. Here it goes; What would it take to convert the VP44 style Injection Pump to a Common Rail Style System? I do not mean an engine swap, rather changing the fuel injection system to a HPCR. I have not studied a 3rd Gen with an eye to change over my engine. I would think that the VP44 would come on out and a CP3 would go in it's place. How different are the Cylinder Head, and the Injectors? Would Common Rail Injectors fit the 2nd Gen Cylinder Head? I would think that the hard part would be the wiring harness and the ECU.

This would fix the VP 44 once and for all. I wonder why none of the vendors and/or Cummins have not offered a kit? Regards, Moose00 Oo.

PS: Flame away if you must :-{}

With enough $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and a really good machinist, I dont see why you couldnt do it. But Id say for all intents and purposes, that probably is not an option.

The swap to hpcr is impractical for a number of reasons, cost, bolt patterns on the front of the block, head design for injectors etc. , gear tooth design, on and on.

The only rebuilder I have heard of that converts (or has a conversion working concept and ability) from VP44 to P7100 is Scheids. Is that correct? There was a little information about it in threads the last week or so.

As for big vendors, Enterprise Engine has done countless VP44 to P7100 swaps... and they have the knowhow to make 'em run right.

J. R. Adkins has also done more than a few conversions with success.

Bottom line: If there's a will, there's a way. However, that will has to be backed up with a lot of cash to make custom parts to convert from a VP44 to common-rail. Converting to a P7100 isn't cheap, but it is more 'doable' and easier than converting to common-rail.

Matt, I think that it is more feasible to just keep the VP44 and plan to change it out when it quits. But I had to ask anyway. See ya in Indy, Moose00
