Several weeks ago I noticed a video someone put on this site that explained step by step how to change out your VP44. It came in 4 parts. I would like to view it again. Does anyone have the link to it? I can not seem to find it. Also, I purchased a VP44 from MWFI and it will arrive on Monday. However, they did not have a gear puller to sell or loan me. Will a regular gear puller work on the pump gear or is there someone in the Escondido Ca. area with one that I could borrow?

I used a steering wheel puller. You will need to find two bolts that screw into the pump gear though. I think the the bolts are 8mmX 1 1/2" long. Another tip to help ya, there are 6 injector lines, I removed the ones for cylinders 1,3 and 4 I believe. The group of lines that feed cylinder #6 you can leave alone just remove them from the back of the VP44 and you can push them toward the block gently to allow enough room to remove the pump. If needed loosen the hold downs for those lines to give you a little play. If you want to remove those lines you will need to remove the engine lift bracket, plus getting to #6 is a pain as well. You may also need a little heat on the gear to get it of the pump shaft, I did on mine. Make darn sure that the key on the pump shaft is at 12 o'clock before pulling the pump so that the woodruffs key on the shaft does not fall out and drop down into the front of the engine. You may need a small mirror to verify this.

It's not a bad job, I was a little intimidated the first time but, all went well and took me about 3 hours.

Thank you for the reply. Whoever did the video did a wonderful job and laid out all the parts one needed. I am looking for an excuss to by stubby ratchet wrenchs which he had used. Will the be necessary? Please tell me yes or that they will make my life much easier!

A 19mm Angle Wrench can also help (to give a little different angle for the tight fuel lines).

Don't forget the PB Blaster and take it easy.

Just did mine Tues. I taped the mirror to the back of the radiator (duct tape)because I didn't have enough hands. When the gear popped off it liked to scare the crap out of me I thought I broke the bolt! lol One thing I did was to glue the key on the new pump, I had one *** of a time trying to stab that baby in there and with my luck I just knew messing with it any more would be fatal for me. Went in like a champ after that. Made a harness to run the lift pump without the truck on and bled the lines , it started right up. Took me about 4 hrs including fooling with that darn key!... ... ... . bp
