What takes out a VP44, whats inside that goes and how do they work ?

i know its a fuel pump!, but i hear of the stories on TDR and i wonder what happens to them

Lift Pump Is The Number 1 Culprit, In Early Pumps It Cracks The Diaphram In The Hyd. Head, Later Pumps It Will Do This But Also Cause Premature Wear Of The Brass Bushed Housing.

The VP44 is lubricated and cooled by excess fuel (versus the P7100 is oil cooled). Which when the lift pump dies (or starts to) the VP looses the extra fuel used for cooling and lubrication.
