My truck died this morning on the way to work. :( It died just as I punched it to the floor to pass a gravel truck that was spitting rocks at me. I'm thinking it is the vp44. It is still original and I've got 91,000 on it now.

What is the best way to determine if it is in fact the vp44? I'm gonna see if there are any codes in the computer but the MIL is not on so I'm thinking there won't be any codes. My thought is the vp44 is the problem here because it died a fraction of a second after I kicked the go pedal down. Does this sound reasonable? What checks should I do to make sure before I go ahead and order the new pump?

Thanks much

-Deon

Only code is P1688. :{ Sounds to me like vp44 failure. What is up with the "Hot Rod" vp44's that I've read about a few times? Is it a lot more $? Is it worth it? Or should I go new or reman?

Thanks

-Deon

I just got through replacing my VP after the 216 code. I was going to go with the Hot Rod 44 but after talking to people and doing research I figured it wasn't worth it to me. My impression is that the electronics are no more reliable and I can't use all the fuel I have out of a stock VP. That's what I know, whatever decision you make you won't be sorry though.

Hey Deon, was wondering if you got it fixed yet? Did you get ahold of SpicyRam(Jim) and Turbotweaker (the fat kid, Andy)? If you still need help putting it in, let me know! Also, since you will have it all apart, maybe throw those injectoers in and maybe do a valve adjustment if you havent lately!

-Matt

Take a look at the upgraded VP-44 from Blue Chip Diesel in NH. It has a better electronics box to make it last longer.

I ordered a standard VP from Bob Wagner. His price was very reasonable. It should arrive Tuesday I think. I'm going to rip into it tonight. I was planning on doing the injectors at the same time but had not thought about the valve adjustment. I'll read up on that procedure in my service manual tonight. Might as well do it at the same time.

No, I haven't tried to got ahold of either of them yet. Not sure if I will need a special puller tool or not for the gear. Bob sent me a guide on how to do the swap and one of the pullers I have looks very similar to the one used in the pics he sent to me. So, I'll see if it works tonight and give them a shout if I have difficulty.

Matt, you busy tonight? Drop by if not - I've got more than one wrench to put to use.

-Deon

Do you still need a hand? Silverram called me today saying he was planning on showing up tomorrow night, and asked if I could help out. Just need to know if you have started yet or not. Later Jim.

who all is showing up??? I am just wondering, as I am home all day and wondering what time ya'll are trickling in-to town. I cut my finger yesterday with a circular saw, so i am sitting home today due to meds. but if I feel aight later, I might stop buy to lend at least one hand... :-laf

I can't make it, I know Kevin has my puller so I know he is coming. Matt, if you go please make sure the key way is on top... ... ... ... ... Andy knows what happens when ya drop it... ... ... ... ... ... lol. Sorry to hear about your finger, sown up or just wrapped? Later Jim.

5pm

Hi Matt. Sorry to hear about your hand. 8 stitches, wow, that sounds like a good size cut. Hope no permanent damage was done and that it heals quick.

Kevin has confirmed he will be over tonight. Around 5pm or so I will be home from work. Wife is picking up Papa Murphy's pizza for us tonight. Hope that is ok with everyone.

Thanks Jim for loaning the puller tool to me/us. Really appreciate that. Anyone is welcome to come as well. I didn't call everyone I guess because I feel like I am imposing on others if I ask for help. Just the way I am I guess. It is really nice to know there are people that will help a guy out when needed.

BIG! thanks to Kevin for making the trek out to Jim's place to pick up the puller.

The pump should arrive today. If not, them we will just have a tear-down session tonight I guess. I'm also thinking on doing my new injector nozzles at the same time. I need to get them pop-tested and adjusted before going back in, right?

See you tonight.

Well Kevin would not had to come all the way out, if I had talked to him. I could have left it at Rick at Conoco in Forest Lake, I stop there every day. But I was running on 6 hours of sleep in 2 days, not unusual but needless to say it was catching up to me. Wish I could be there, I would have just spent at my brothers house afterwards since he lives there in Lakeville anyway. Good luck.

Deon, I will see what I can do. I would love to help out in anyway I can. If its in, Maybe someone can help me change out my dipstick tube since my left hand has to stay clean.

The cut was nasty looking but it wasnt really bad. I have a "U" shaped cut on the side of my ring finger. The saw caught, kick backwards and went between my fingers cutting into the ring finger. Luckly it didnt go across my fingers or I would have been carring my finger(s) to the ER in a ice bag... But its ok, the darn thing dont hurt actually, and just the antibiotics are what are making me sick to my stomach, so honestly, it could be alot worse!

I wish I could make it down as well... . Kevin called and talked to me last night, but I have softball tonite. Last game of this season (spring/summer). Fall ball will start up in a week or 2... . so every Tues and Wed till Oct I'm tied up.

Alpha, sorry to hear about your hand..... I know how much it'll ache later! My thumb STILL doesn't feel the same! (hit it with a hammer on the top side, fractured just behind the knuckle, needed 3 stitches on the bottom side)

You guys sure do seem to be a great group up in the cities... sure wish I still lived up that way! If I can ever be of any help just give me a yell because I've been itching to get up there and visit some old friends and look up some people who still owe me money. I lived in the Farmington/Lakeville area for a few years working at AAA Auto Salvage and at Ray's Cars part time and then started building houses on my own. I sure do miss it all! I'm no pro mechanic but I have a book and tools and will travel! Regards, Chris

Chris, where did ya live at? I live on the southern edge of Lakeville and know this entire area like the back of my hand, been here the entire 27 years of my life. I know exactly where AAA Auto Salvage is. Use to live 2 minutes away. Come on up anytime. We didnt get to putting the new VP-44 in Deons truck tonight, as it didnt show up on the UPS truck like we had hoped. looking like Friday, but you would have to ask Deon if he needs another hand though. I might or might not be able to make it friday anyway.
