Hi,

I have a 1999 dodge Ram with 102000 miles was going down the road when the engine dies. I had it towed to Cummins Southern Plains and they said that it is the VP44 injection pump and it will cost $2000. 00 to put in a rebuilt one. They said that the lift pump is OK.

The injection pump or the lift pump have never been replaced since i bought the truck in 99.

It seems to me that the lift pump would go out before the VP44 injection pump, $2000. 00 is a lot of money in this economy.

I would like any input and help on this matter.

Thank You, Ed2

I can get brand new for 1900 but 2000 sounds about right. I seen rebuilds for 800 somewhere. Maybe piers. 4 hours labor. puts it around 1200. you might look around for a cheaper rebuild.

Could a guy install one himself or is it too involved???

If you are good with wrenches you can do your own vp44. If someone put together instructions (see Piers) it takes about 1. 5-2 hours. This is NOTHING like replacing the P4100 injector pump. :D

Thanks for your help. Do you think I should replace the Lift Pump at the same time?

I purchased a new,not rebuilt, one for $850 plus $200 exchange about a month ago. . I don't have the number right now, but I will PM you the name and address tomorrow moring from work...

I had mine changed as well at Cummins Southern Plains here in Houston and mine was around $1400 for everything. VP44, transfer pump and all the labor. But what I learned is that theres 2 different kinds of pumps, and one is afew hundred dollars cheaper that the other... Sorry to hear of your problems... I know what it's like!

Here's what I know of the VP pumps.

The old model is the ... 011 pump and has been determined to be problematic. These pumps showed up in the pre 2000 trucks (I think). The ... 027 pump is the same pump (essentially) with some improvements to help it live longer. If you check out www.bluechipdiesel.com he's got a pretty good explaination of how the VP works and how it can fail. The ... 028 pump is the HO pump for the ETH's. Just FYI.

I am buying a reman unit for a couple of reasons. First, it will have all the latest and greatest updates. Second, it's all I can afford right now. $995 for the reman unit is what I'm paying. The same guy has a new unit (027) on the shelf for $1395. I think Chip has them for $1300 new and usdieselproducts has them for $1062 reman.

Bosch has stopped making these pumps new and you will only be able to get reman units soon. Another FYI.

What I think you should do is get a fuel pressure gauge. And keep your lift pump. If you install the new VP and your pressure drops out, then get a new LP. Right now, I wouldn't do too much without a fuel pressure setup because your LP is suspect until proven otherwise. You need the VP, so get one. But get gauges and watch your fuel pressure.

Hope this answers your question.

Bosch still make brand new vp44 pumps. I just had a "new' pump installed on my 99 & the bosch dealer told me the reman are only just that--they only repair the problem--NO upgrades. I bought a new pump for aprox 1200. 00. Bosch dealer installed it for 1500. 00 complete. well worth it. IMO--go for the new pump.

Oh yeah Herman8r?!

Not wanting to be made out a liar (I can't stand that), I wrote to Bosch and the response is below.

Hello Aron,

You are correct, we do not manufacture new VP44 pumps anymore.

Remanufactured and repaired are two different things, as far as remanufactured pumps from Bosch, they are completely rebuilt (new gaskets, o-rings latest production calibration and so on). If you buy a reman unit I would make sure it's from Bosch or an authorized dealer.

I hope this helps

Dear Sir,

I was referred to you by a friend of mine as being a source of information that might be able to answer a question for me. I currently own a '99 Dodge with the Cummins ISB engine with a VP-44 injection pump (that failed). I am contemplating a reman unit as I was under the impression that new units are no longer being made. However, I am also being told that the reman units are not updated units, but repaired ones. Can you please clarify this situation for me? Are the Bosch VP-44 pumps still being manufactured for stock? Are the reman units just repaired pumps or are they completely rebuilt and updated to the latest factory revision? Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Aron Howlett

I deleted the email addresses of these gentlemen to prevent a million people from asking them stuff.

I did just purchase a new pump today though. It seems there is a run on the reman units. About a month out from what I understand. Can't wait that long so I bit it. Oh well. That's the way it goes.

Aron--Thanks for the info. It goes to show that one can not always believe what they are told. The info I gave you was straight from the Bosch Dealer where I bought my VP44. Now I have a call to make!!

For the record--I would never call anyone on this forum a LIAR. I am sorry if you took it this way.
