Cummins Diesel Tour

Remote Turbo Mounting - Seen this?

You know, I have never thought of the VW diesel much of anything but a headache. I had to take a head spin when I heard they are coming out with a V-10 diesel for there new SUV. Just my input on this would be "WHY!"? IMO they never a great motor to start with so why try to lure customers to this new motor? Guess it will help to show that diesel motors are some crappy motors... ... ... ... LOL!!!!!!!! :--)

It looks like you have never driven a VW Diesel:confused: I owned a 1980 VW Dasher Diesel Wagon for 19 years and until my Dodge goes that long, It was the best car I ever drove. It was a sturdy, non-turbo 1. 6ltr engine. It consistantly got me 36 to 44 mpg and NEVER left me walking.

I have to question if you are making your opinion based on here-say, or the failure of one engine/car.

For an engine that you and a friend can literally lift out of the motor bay... The things are pretty decent.

The B series will take a lot more toture and damn well it should. The head on the B series weighs nearly the same as the whole VW motor.

Keeping track of as many diesel creations as I can, I have not found a better auto-diesel in this country.

The burning BMW thing in the Lincolns? Perhaps that Mazda abortion in the Escorts? The Camry Turbo-D?

In my experience, the only one that came close to the VW was the Sentra diesel... and not TOO close.

The 5/6 cylinder they used in the Volvo's/Audis. That thing sucked. But in its 4 cylinder form, it made for a good powerplant.

Though it is not a truck motor, the VW is pretty good at what it does. Even if the new ones do eat a few MAF's. I know of six of them personally that do NOT get provincial treatment and are getting near the 150,000 mark with nothing more than a couple of timing belts and a MAF sensor.

Not too bad for a Budweiser motor if you ask me.

I never said it was a pile, just not much of a motor in my opinion. I have had VW, but not the diesel. Know people who have, and my choice was not to have one. I was just making a comment of VW making a V-10 for there SUV, why? Why wouldn't they make an 8 or a straight 6? Why does it have to a 10? My guess is to lure people to there new SUV, if it fails then there is another notch against diesel. Thats all, we all forget what GM tried in the 80's? Look at all the noses turned up from that choice. Even though I still own a '93 6. 5 turbo, I am not one to hate anyone that tries. By the way, the '93 is for sale... ... ... ..... lol.

I have to jump in here and put a check in the "okey-dokey" column for VW diesels.

Had an 81 pickup for a few years... not much power in that 1. 6L but I ran the H out of it. I sold it with 185K on the engine.

Stripped an 81 truck for parts that had 375 k on the odometer. The oil pump failed and siezed her up.

But have one glow plug go out and they positively won't start in the New England winter.

Wife just bought a 99 Jetta IV TDI. That thing has some balls now... . and it'll be chipped as soon as she sells her gas Jetta.

I am told the 1. 9 TDi engine was built to be a diesel. The same block is also used in the 1. 8T gas engine. No don't think GM! Think over-built gasser!

1. 9 is a fine engine once you get past the emmission controls.

81 Rabbit PU, 349508miles when the odo quit 4 yrs ago, no major repairs. Great cars if you don't expect too much more than what they are.

I like the TDI's too but still it is not a very good design. When they fix the timing belt replacement issue, I may buy one. The frequency of the timing belt replacement ruins the economy of the engine. There is no reason why they can't use a gear or chain drive that requires no replacment or adjustments. Unless you change parameters and recalibrate the EGR system with theVAG-COM the EGR system makes a huge mess in the intake manifold which requires periodic cleaning. I would love to have one but VW needs to clean up the bugs. ;) :D

It takes less than 5 minutes to adjust the EGR flow to within "OEM allowed" parameters. Once you set these parameters... . you never have to change 'em back... . and the intake will never clog again.

The replacement timing belts last 80k miles... . This is a pretty good interval. I don't see what the fuss is all about.

My VAG-COM (HEX-COM) is on its way in the mail. Now I get to hack the ECM in the VW.

That new VW diesel sounds pretty stout.

Dohc 40 valve 5. 0 liter turbo diesel V-10, 30,000psi injection pressure makes 308hp, 553ft lbs of torque. Thats in a 4500lb grocery getter. Can you say tire smoke? Better be checking your mirrors this thing might give some of us a run for thier money!
