Picked Up My SWEPLINE 1969 W200 Power Wagon Today

I'm looking to buy a 89 VW Jetta GLS Turbo diesel with an engine that I was told is blown. Looking at the car it dosen't look too bad but it has sat for several years. Also the injection lines are unhooked from the pump. Any thoughts on what it would cost to rebuild the engine? Or any other thoughts on the car. The car has 219,000 miles on it.

How much do they want , if the price is reasonable then you need to find out what they mean by blown , my last [ 85 vw jetta diesel ] some messed up putting in the timing belt , ended up bending a couple valves , I did a valve job and ran for 10 yrs.
Then you will need to look closely at the fuel system with the lines being off for some time , can cause all kinds of issues , rust , mosture ect.
Thats some miles but it may not be an issue , buy it cheap enough that you can expect to put in the pump & eng. & still come out ok .
I would guess with out seeing that $0 - maybe $600 .

not 100% sure but I bet that is not the newer TDI diesel. If its the older version I think its called an Ecco diesel. the turbo was to clean up the emissions. It will get good mileage but compaired to modern diesels they are Dogs.

I had one of the ecodiesels--'92, i believe, the last year before the break in VW's diesel shipments to the US. Man, it was a dog! Turbo was for emissions and dropped horsepower rating to about 52. My '85 turbodiesel would blow the eco away. The 85 was more powerful and much better mileage. I think I got about 48 mpg in the 85; about 33 with the 92. My 99 TDI with auto and some tweeking had nice power and was doing about 55 mpg. My 2002 jetta wagon (auto) had good power and about 40 mpg. I have two 2006 jetta tdi sedans. the one with the most mileage (30,000) seems to have settled in at about 48 mpg. Just got the second one a few days ago so I don't know how it will compare. Both have the DSG auto transmissions.

If you have to replace the engine look for something other than the eco version. You will have more power and better mileage.

I'm not sure but I don't think that the 89 I am looking at is and eco diesel. And what I was told was that the engine is the original that came with it. Does anyone know roughly what it would cost to rebuild figureing new pistons, machine work and a head job?

Katman, have you had the body computer adjusted for the fuel mileage display?

starting in 2005. 5 (we have one) they all read around 5-7mph high

With a laptop and VAG-com you can reprogram most of the settings in the different computers (in fact I think mine has 7 different computers)

I have set them so the remote can role up and down the windows, adjusted the MPG display, turned off the seat belt warning, mine came without the electric cabin heater turned on, simple change of a code and it now works!

Our 2005. 5 diesel with DSG has gotten 42mph over its life of almost 40K miles. Almost to the point where I have to service the trans. Kind of reminds me of the Dodge 5 speed, $27. 00 per quart for DSG fluid (and it takes 4)!

TowProw--haven't done VagCom on either of the 06 cars yet. Just lazy getting over to my friend McNew. Actually, I thought the wife would get me Vagcom for Xmas but she got me a bed extender for the truck and a few other items. Her 06 is the one with the 30,000 miles and I'm going by her report of 48. Looking at your numbers maybe she is relying on the inaccurate display instead of hand calculating. I'll have to check with her. Be a darn shame if I only pick up a few mpg by moving to the 06 from the 02, but I sure like the dsg transmission!

I know where a 2006 diesel Jetta with about 9500 miles on it is. Do any of you guys have any idea what it's worth? I think it will be for sale in the high teens.

Its hard to say. First there is not any 07's which can run the price higher, but then Gas keeps going down which can make the value lower. I would start with KBB.com prices. First I would Check the VIN at a VW dealer and see what has been done to it.

I recall when the gas prices spiked 2 summers ago, late 90's TDI's with 100K miles were getting sold on Ebay for almost $10K! Then one month later mine got rear ended and totaled. INsurance company would only give me $5300 plus allowed me to keep the car. Then I sold the totaled car for $2K so I guess I did OK :D

EDIT: Did you say low teens? I just ran the retail value on our 2005. 5 Jetta 5, package 2. $24,555. 00 with 40K miles on it!

I can't tell you much about the car cause I haven't seen it yet. It's supposed

to be in perfect condition. I don't know if it's a plain Jane car or loaded. I just wanted to get a feel for prices. When I get to see it I'll let you guys know. Thanks in advance

Someone in the Annapolis, MD area listed a 2006 last week. It had 40,000 miles and he was asking $22,500. Right now there are new TDI cars around here for about $2,000-$3,000 more from dealers that want to sell cars.

Ok getting back to the original post. What would be the approximate cost to rebuild a TDI for an 89 jetta figuring minor machine work? Also what parts would you recommend replacing at a rebuild.

Did you check this site when I first posted ?
The only way to know for sure is to let a machine shop have it & inspect it , to give a estimet , not free [ there are a few things that they need to see to know what it will take ] , also try to find a shop in your area that does work on these , it helps if they have been there done that .

Well I talked to the owner of the car and he said that it has sat for at least 2 years. I cranked over the engine so its not locked up. Then he told me that the pump kept loosing prime so I believe it is probably all in the injection pump. Hopefully thats all. I guess i'll have it checked on the test stand. If thats the problem I guess new fluids and filters all around and hope for the best.
