Who knows what the status is of the new Passat TDI. Heard it was a late model for 2004. We are very happy with our 98 Jetta TDI, but it is getting up there in miles. :(

Looking at the web, not too much info. Might just buy another Jetta. . :)

Look in Consumer Reports- the Golf, Jetta, and New Beetle all have a 1. 9 TD making 100 HP, but the Passat has a 2. 0 TD making 134 HP. The mag is on the newsstands now-check it out.

The bad news is that you can't get one in California. In fact there no diesel powered vehicles for sale in the CARB states that are under 8500 gvw for the 2004 model year. Your gonna need to be "creative" if you want one.

They are here!

Went for my 40K service on my 2003 Jetta TDI here in Farmington NH and the dealership had a brand new 2004 Passat 2. 0L TDI in the lot already sold ... so I could not open the door or the hood.

There was a older couple from Maine looking at the Passat and wanted to order one on the spot! The dealer said he could not do it for them since they lived in Maine. He could not sell any of the diesels to Maine, Vt. , Mass, NY, or RI residents ... boy were those people PO'ed.

Said it would get 35+ mpg.

They also had the new V10 Tourage TDI on the lot! Nice looking machine, I would love to take it for a drive, but the $62,995 price tag made me keep at least 1 foot away from it. A sales man asked if I wanted to test drive it, but I said no way! I didn't want to be responsible if something happed to it ... you know they would find some way to make you pay for it if something did happen.

They also had 2 of the new super high end luxury cars. Can't remember the name of them, but at $72,000+ a piece! I wanted to stay about 5 feet away from them.

I thought VW stood for "people's car" not "rich people's car".

Passat TDI sounds allright .

Does that mean we can get one with the AWD I think it's called "4-motion" If so that's my choice over the Liberty Diesel.

Thank you for everyones input. Does anyone have advice on buying out of California and bringing into State--Legaly--

My father lives in Nevada, so I could have a address to use?

Thanks

Greg

Put your father on the registration til you get to 6 months or 7500 miles. At that point California considers it a used vehicle and you can then bring it in legally.

Boyd.

Once the vehicle meets California's standard for being used, it can brought in without any changes to the car. And since it would be diesel, there will be no smog inspection since California doesn't smog diesels.

California also makes it easy to do a family transfer of a vehicle (from your father to you) for registration without paying any sales tax.

The Phaeton (sp?) very nice cars. No, they are not for the average joe.

Unfortunately there will be no AWD version or a 5 or 6 speed manual. The Dealer said that the 4-motion's have not been selling very good and they did not want to increase the price of the new 2. 0L diesels any more than they were. You are already paying a premium for a diesel, so an AWD version would be in the low 40's.

Too bad.

The 4 motion is not that important. We have always been a fan of sticks, but I think an auto would be o. k. for a car as nice as a Passat. I guess the other option would be a MB. The upfront cost doesn't worry as much as the maintenance costs. Our VW has been basically cost free unexpected maintenance wise. MB has a killer new motor from what I"m hearing though.

Then there could be a major overhaul of the 94 for my wife to drive---this would be a very cool daily driver--she grins large when driving this truck

OEM MB parts are about 1/2 to 1/3 the price of OEM VW parts and in my experience, the MB is heck of a lot less likely to need them.

MB builds virtually bulletproof Diesels - I would expect that the '99 E300TD which was the last Diesel model sold in North America to drop to a more realistic price when the new E-class Diesel comes out.

MB also has a wicked 350HP twin-turbodiesel S-class sedan which unfortunately is not likely to be available in North America

I am going to yell for a second here;)

DO NOT BUY A PASSAT TDI YET!!!!!

ok did you hear that?

my wife has an '03 Jetta TDI, GREAT car! but she wants something bigger, so I picked up a Passat TDI for her to test drive. What a bummer. Hit 70 mph and you could feel a constant hiccup. almost felt like fuel starvation. get it up to 80 and it gets worse. at one point at about 72 mph it felt like it was going to shut down. I took it back and dropped it off and told them I was going to wait for the manual to come out.

The next day I went to another VW dealer and was talking to a service writer and he said they are having problems with the Passats, he wasn't allowed to go into detail, but he did say DO NOT BUY ONE YET. His dealership has sold a few and had to buy one back already and there were problems with others. This was a VERY large dealer in Hampton roads VA.

Other than the obvious problems, it was a nice car and rode very nice. I like the new guages for this year, and it was alot of car for the $25k sticker.

I believe its 1 year or 7500 miles, but check before you buy. I had no problem with my truck. I bought it in SC and CA would not register it for me even though it was a diesel. 2 years and 40k miles later no problem.

One was on I45 North of Houston the other day with a temporary tag on it. First one I've seen yet (haven't been looking though). Just suprised to see TDI on the back of a new Passat. I remember reading a few months ago they were going to import them to the US.

Now I want to see the TDI Touareg in the US!

thetoureg tdi are in america already!. . check out www.tdiclub.com they have a few pics on the forum of some... i read a post with pics on www.vwvortex.com from a guy in florida that had one and pics of it etc. . they are out there just too expensive for me ...

thanks
