Hey fellas, I just got a 96 passat tdi and my question to you guys here that have these, what oil and brand filter do you guys use. It has delvac synthetic in it, but what viscousity, 10-50? I have been to the tdi site, however, I would like some input here, please. Since I retired and work part time, I never have any free time, so busy! Thanks in advance fellas. Tim :)

Also, is it a good idea to add some stanadyne to the fuel to help the pump on these engines? Thanks Tim

Hi Tim;

First of all it was kinda an eye brow raiser that you posted on a the TDR 1st gen site for this topic. I would have thought you might want to check out the VW TDI club, oh well, but I think you may have just lucked out, that since we are diesel junkies some of us might just own a TDI as well.

Anyway if you have synthetic and have not changed it to regular oil stay with the synthetic. Your owners manual should specify all this including the 50 weight oil.

I personally use the Castrol syntec specifically formulated for the VW TDI engines. Also from what I understand it is really second to none for oil for the TDI.

Of coarse there are other brands, but be careful some brands say synthetic but are really a synthetic blend.

As for additives..... well... OK... as everyone knows me by now ... and I have to say it again, just use a "biodiesel" blend.

These TDI engines were designed for it, and I can assure you that you will notice the difference, smoother and quieter on the acceleration. Same or better mileage. And much cleaner on the emmissions.

VW did not reccomend any additives, at least when I asked them.

VW has also announced that they will warrantee North American VW's for use with up to B50 (thats 50% biodiesel to regular diesel). I use up to B50 on the wifes car and it runs fantastic.

Hope this helps

Peter

Thanks peter,I felt that i would get a better perspective from you fellas here on this subject. thanks again, Tim.

If I had a 1996 Passat I would use Delvac 1 or Amsoil AME 15w-40 and a MANN filter. There is NO reason to use dealer specific Castrol in this motor, its the "old style" motor with a rotary pump just like the Cummins 6BT. I have some direct experience with this TDI motors as I had a 2000 and a 1998.

Brian

Is delvac 1 a synthetic oil? I use dello 15-40 in the cummins and was thinking of using it in the vw also! Thanks Tim

Delvac 1 5w-40 (silver jug) is synthetic. Delvac 1300 15w-40 (black jug) is not.

A similar and much more readily available product is Mobil 1 Truck & SUV 5w-40.

Newer TDI's required synthetic oil and long term use of improper oil leads to increased engine wear and oil consumption. The earlier TDI's did not specify syn in the owner's manual and some that test the oil show elevated ring wear and they also report increased oil consumption.

Starting in 2000, VW specified synthetic 5w-40 and set the change interval at 10,000 miles. Using the Mobil 5w-40 (Delvac or T&S) this number is conservative for stock (and many modified) cars.

Brian
