How are our front brakes set up? Are the rotors separate from the hubs or are they one unit? Mine are well worn from the low pad indicator and the guy at NAPA didn't know which one to sell or quote me.

Aloha,

Matt

They are separate. You have to punch the studs out to get them apart though.

All you need to buy are the rotors, not the whole assembly. When i did mine i had to replace 2-3 studs.

Thanks, Chris. That's what I kinda figured from looking at an exploded view on a Dodge parts site. I could have the rotors turned but it's faster to just swap them out instead of waiting on it at the machine shop.

Aloha,

Matt

Only thing different on the rotor's is if you have a 4500 lb axle the rotor's are bigger but simple to change out just a brass punchand a good hammer . and a little TLC

csnider:

what do you mean by turning the new rotors after they are on the hubs?

i need to do my fronts bad. my buddy(drives a 99f350) says i have to take my hubs apart to get the rotors off. is this true or do i just need to punch out the studs? thanks... . james

Yes, you have to take the hubs off before you can take the rotor and hub assembly off. Once you have the assembly off you punch out the studs and separate the rotor from the hub assembly.

At this point I would check out your 4 wheel bearings also. The bearings aren't too terribly expensive, so since you have all this apart already they might be worth replacing. At the very least i'd repack everything with new grease.

Yes,

once they are mounted onto your hubs, they may be a bit untrue to your hubs . So, most "good" brake shops will give them a turn after they are mounted to your hubs. . Many shops don't do this...
