I just did a rear brake job on my 1990 w350. I didn't like the nylock/wedge bearing retainers, so I replace them with the two nuts and locking washer with the tabs. (like ford used to use). But I wasn't sure on the adjusting proceedure.

Can someone tell me what the correct proceedure should be?

Would it be the same as the nylock? Tighten to 120 ft lbs. Then back off 120 degrees?

Thanks Mark

bearing adjustment

Hey Mark, the adjustment is not like the wedge adjustment!! I too changed the nuts on mine some time ago and the procedure that i use is to try to bring the bearing to "0" preload. I bring the first nut up tight, real tight and spin the wheel by hand, then I back the nut off to just loose, and then bring the nut back up to the bearing. If it is a little tight, it will be ok, but not a lot tight. Then tab over the lock and run the outer nut up real tight. I used a otc nut wrench #7158 which is a 2 1\2" size. One note that I do, is I coat the bearings with a light coat of bearing lube for the initial start up, not packed, just lightly smeared with no problems. Some folks say that the axle bearing need a lot of preload, that just isn't so. Also I think that once you go in there that you should install speedi sleeves to protect the axle housings from grooves that are going to happen, but thats just my 2 cents. Hopes this helps. Tim
