Sorry About The Stupid Title Guys.

My Queshtion Is Why Will My Wastegate On My Automatic Truck Sound So Cool When I Build Up Boost And Let Off Intentionally And All Of My Buddies Straight Drives Just Go Whoosh!!

I Have Rode In Quite A Few Auto Trucks And All Seem To Do The Cool- Waa Choo Chooo Chooooo Chooooooo!- Sound From The Wastegate.

I Understand How A Wastegate Functions Just Wondering Why A Straight Wont Do It??

Thanks, Mike

I think what your referring to is known as "turbo bark". It's not a good thing. I don't think I would be doing it intentionally.

As to why it sounds different from a manual to an auto, I don't know.

Yea It Probably Isnt Good, But... It Sure Does Sound Neat!!

You Say A "bark", It Sounds More Like 5 Wildcats Fighting Under The Hood!!! :-{}

It Also Made The Sounds Before I Did The Modifications So I Know That Didnt Make It Do It. The Mods Just Made It Louder.

so just wondering but why do the turbos bark? The only reason I ask is because the more fuel, the more boost the more bark.

The bark occures when you're under a condition of high boost and you quickly lift the throttle. Your engine is no longer driving the turbine in the turbo but you still have this large volume of compressed air in your intake manifold and intercooler. That pressure puts the compressor in a stall as it tries to get back out through it, thus the sound you hear. This is really hard on the turbo and you can easily snap the shaft in the turbos with larger compressor/turbines and small shafts (hx40 for example).

A blowoff valve is a good option if you want to continue to make that noise without the ill effects. Probably won't make the same noise though. I'd say just don't do it. Does sound cool though.

Ive Heard A Blow Off Valve Wont Work On A Turbo Diesel?! Is There Any Truth?

Maybe I Can Buy One Of Those Cool Greddy(import Crap) Blow Off Valves.

Good Thing A Cummins Wasnt An Option In A Taxi Cab--fuuuulll Throttle--- Let Off--repeat 1000 Times A Day. Heck You Couldnt Tell If It Was 100 Turbos "barking" Or 1000 Pigeons Taking Off!

I Must Say Though The Hx35 Must Be Tougher Than The 40 Cus' Ive Done It Every Day For A Year Now.

Maybe Off The Post But If My Compressor Wheel Does Come Apart Will It Harm My Engine? Maybe I Need A Screen Before My Intercooler?!

Yes, it could damage the engine. Could drop a valve, or worse. The intercooler will catch some of the pieces, but may not catch them all.

yes, there is SOME truth to that. A BOV wont work quite the same on a diesel as it does on a gasseer, reason being, when you lift the throttle on a gas motor, vaccuum is created. Not so on the diesel, that is why they have vaccuum pumps to run the HVAC controls and such.

Butttt, with a little ingenuity, a BOV can be made to work on a turbo diesel. Its not just a simple bolt-on affair, though.

If you want an out of the box BOV, get a BD turbo guard. They come with everything you need to make it work on an auto.
