Bought an 89 250 Cummins last month. Does the 89 have a wait to start light? If it does I can't find it. So far it has been starting without waiting. In the morning, get in, turn the key and it starts right up.

Yep, it's there beside the Dodge/cummins logo on the dash panel right above the heater controls. I've different things from different people but as for mine, if I turn the key to run but not all the way to start, the lghts in the "message center" all self check then go out. If its cold enough the wait to start light will stay on while the heaters cycle. When the light goes off, then I crank on it and it'll generally start on the first or second revolution.
Hope this helps, Jones

My wait to start light isn't working right..... and also all the lights on the dash should come on as a bulb check when you turn the key to start... well mine do anyway, but my wts light and preheating system aren't working right... i'm looking for help on this.

Went out this morning, 42 degrees, started right up with no wait time. My brake light and anti lock light stay on all the time.

FD5,
Your truck is most likely an early built truck with a controller serial number below 880000. These controllers didn't cycle the heaters on until it get below 15*F and won't cycle the heaters after start up. The newer ones cycle the heaters on below 59*F and will cycle them after start up if it is below 15*F. Disconnecting the temp sensor will cause the heaters to cycle for full duration every time the key is turned to the on position and the wts light will start to blink when the heaters go off. This is the mode my truck is currently in. I'm trying to find a working used controller to replace mine. Parts book shows that this heater controller was used all the way up thru 94.
Hope this rambling tyrade helped.

The '89s are more forgiving for cooler weather. Newer trucks fire the heaters if its below 60 LOL. Mine doesn't fire the heaters to near 10 or 20°F outside but will cycle after startup anywhere around 40 and below.
(edit) The message centre where the brake lights are have the WTS and WIF lights in the same bar. They should come on briefly when you turn the key. If not the bulbs are replacable after a good dismantling of the dash.

For the brake light problem, just disconnect the battery power for about 2 min to reset the ABS computer and if the error comes back, then start checking the system. From time to time (about once every 2 years) the lights come on, but go away after I reset the computer.

I think i need a new controler. If I disconnect mine, telling to computer that its below like -15 fifteen or something, then the heaters will cycle for 30 seconds. With the sensor plugged in, I recall a morning when it was actually that cold, they cycled for 15 seconds. I guess i'm on the look. Is it possible to retrofit a newer controller on the old model trucks?

Jaynes and the rest,
Yes the contoller from a newer(slightly) truck will fit. The part number for the 89 supercedes to the part number for the 90-94 trucks. If one off you is really freindly with your local auto recycler and could get me a Hollander number I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks.
