If you read my other posts I have been asking about fuel mileage issues on my 98 12valve(avg 9-11 empty with 3. 54 gears and auto)Truck is at dealership getting some issues resolved and I told them about my crappy mileage and I wanted this looked at. They called me today and said that since my truck was rated above 8800 that no fuel mileage estimates are given for my truck, so they have nothing to go against to compare. Basically he said what you get is what you get. I told him about maybe a timing issue but he said they truck ran fine so they couldnt check it. I told him I talked to other owners and they got much better mileage than me but he said he could not go off of that. Do I have a leg to stand on or better yet does anyone have a number I can call to address this problem with some higher ups?? THANKS

RedNut:

Sorry about all the problems you
are having concerning fuel mileage.
I read all the "answers" to your
last posting on "Fuel Companies. "
The other members suggestions are
things that I would recommend to
you also.

As you can see by my signature, I
have a 96'Dodge CTD. I bought it new
and from day one it had very low power
AND bad mileage. Not quite as bad as
yours but around 12-13 MPG empty. I
knew this wasn't right as I had owned
a 92'Dodge CTD right before I bought
my 96' and that truck had very good
power for only being 160 H. P. and got
consistent 18-20 empty and around town.
A Dodge dealership agreed to "pull"
the pump and send it off to an outside
company to "recalibrate" the P7100
pump. When I got the truck back it
ran TERRIBLE!!

To make a long story short, I paged
through the "Turbo Diesel Register"
and called Dan Scheid at "Scheid
Diesel" in Terre Haute, Indiana.
I explained my problems to him and
he asked me to bring the truck up
to him so he could look at it. Well,
it turned out that my pump settings
were WAY OFF! None of them were even
within Bosch's recommended settings!
He recalibrated the pump, CORRECTLY,
and to the "high end of the specs. "
and my problems were over! When I left
there and drove home my 96' seemed
like a "different" truck. My mileage
was a consistent 17. 9 to 18. 3 running
empty! And Dan did all the work under
warranty!

I have never gotten the "high" mileage
I see some of the other members report-
ing with their "2nd Generation Trucks"
but then I don't drive "easy" either.
I run my truck hard and do pull with
it alot.

I would recommend you find a good
Bosch dealer in your area and have
"thoroughly" check your pump. Your
situation may be different from
mine but I'll bet the problem is
in there somewhere.

I hope this has helped you.

I thought my mileage was bad at 15. 0 MPG empty, and almost the same towing a 10,000 trailer.
I can tell you, your has/should be better, as mine is near 7000 empty and I have 4:10 rears.

I've been very disapointed so far by Dodge dealers and the vague answers...

Example:
One guy wanted to charge me $250 to change the ABS sensor on the rear end. ( He said they were on the wheels) I would up doing it myself in 15 minutes, and never saw the sensor. . Had to do it on my back, by hand and feel.

Some of these dealer's are almost funny.

Good luck with yours. . I think your not far off from getting that 20 MPG. . #ad

RedNut,
Are there any other dealeres in your area?
Sometimes you can find a dealer that will react the right way.
For the most part Dodge service departments do not have a good enough diesel mechanic oh, I mean technician. Dodge techs are not aloud to touch inside of injector pump, Only Cummins and Bosc service dealer.
When I had problems with my Mule(warranty)Dodge sent it to Cummins and a Diesel shop(Cummins replaced Injector pump). What the Diesel shop did I don't know but I think they apparently were Bosc dealer. About a month later I recieved first TDR #14 it had TSB for symptons that matched perfectly, fix was replacement of return fuel valve. But many things can go wrong with fuel system that has same symptons.
Go to another dealer or Cummins, good Diesel shop even if you have to pay, just save receipts.
Also try calling District office.

Rednut,it might be wrth your drive to go to autowerks in Caldwell NJ,it isnt that far from you,I have heard nothing but praise from everyone who goes to them,MIke Primavora will take care of you, they are a Bosch dealer, certified to work on your pump under warranty if needed. While your there-have him turn it up a bit-LOL

I understand "Diesel Injection/Marmon
of Pittsburgh is supposed to be good.
The owner of this shop is in the TDR
Links section.

By way of your answer to my last post
(all in capital letters) I guess you
didn't care for my advice too much.

Sorry it didn't help you RedNut.

John P didnt mean it that way sorry you took it that way I appreciate your advice just in a rush to leave and didnt even notice I was in caps

I have a 96 4X4 Ext Cab and the best I can squeeze out of it is around 14. 7 mpg. The truck runs OK, but has the usual low end lag. I bought the Chrysler "Master Technician" Cummins Diesel video in hopes that it would provide some useful information. If you have their giant hand held computer diagnostic tester, (probably costs $1,000,000) you can check everything out. One good thing about the video is that it takes you through the pump timing procedure. The tools required to do that are only about $250. By the time I got the video, with shipping it was around $50. Figured I'd call around to see what it costs for a timing adjustment. About the same... . Think I'll invest in the tools and see to it that the job's done right... :)

I'm glad you "were just in a rush to
leave" and not upset at my answer.

I did some more checking for you and
was able to speak with a "Bosch" rep.
who gave me the names of a few "Certified
Bosch Repair Facilities" in eastern
Pennsylvania that he feels could help
you with the pump. Not knowing exactly
where you live, I told him to keep
it within "eastern Pennsylvania" when
he researched it for me. Listed below
are the names of those dealers and the
cities they are in.

1. ) Miller Diesel Service
6030 Jonestown Road
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
Phone#: (717) 545-5931

2. ) Penn Diesel Service
337 N. Fairville Ave.
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
Phone#: (717) 545-4207

3. ) Dick Laing Diesel Service
2905 Lycoming Creek Road
Williamsport, Pennsylvania
Phone#: (570) 494-0874

RedNut, he said there were more
so if you can give me an "idea"
of what your close to I will get
him to look that up too.

Hope this helps you!

RedNut:

I almost forgot! All those dealers I
listed including the one below that
I forgot, are considered "D++" dealers.
He told me that meant the are a "Diesel
Service Dealer (DSD)-Heavy Duty & Auto-
motive Work: Authorized to test and
repair the following pumps: HD-MW, P,
P7100 and VE pump types. "

The "++" means "Special authorization
to test and repair diesel injection
pumps equipped with Electronic Diesel
Control. "

The dealer I forgot: (Sorry!)

I see by your profile you live in
Indiana. I highly recommend "Scheid

are "Bosch" certified and they are
very good at what they do.

2. ) Scheid Diesel-Lafayette, Indiana
