If you read my other posts I have been asking about fuel mileage issues on my 98 12valve(avg 9-11 empty with 3. 54 gears and auto)Truck is at dealership getting some issues resolved and I told them about my crappy mileage and I wanted this looked at. They called me today and said that since my truck was rated above 8800 that no fuel mileage estimates are given for my truck, so they have nothing to go against to compare. Basically he said what you get is what you get. I told him about maybe a timing issue but he said they truck ran fine so they couldnt check it. I told him I talked to other owners and they got much better mileage than me but he said he could not go off of that. Do I have a leg to stand on or better yet does anyone have a number I can call to address this problem with some higher ups?? THANKS

Sorry to hear about this but the dealer is correct that the truck is not EPA rated for fuel milege and the only thing they could do (if it was a good dealer) would be to compare against other like trucks like the ones you have numbers from.

If you want to the Dodge customer service number it is listed in your owners manual.

BV my other quotes are from other TDR members thats all I have

Rednut,go back to the dealer an act like you want to buy a Cummins truck. Ask the salesman what mileage you can expect,he'll probibly say around 20. Ask the salesman to repeat that to the service manager, then tell them that's what you expected from your '98. Could work,no harm tring.

Call the DC customer service line, SOMETIMES it can be surprising that they actually light a fire under the lazy dealiers heiney. I did it after waitung 4 months for my new truck to show up and got some "preferred attentiion" from my dealier. Didn't make the truck show up any sooner (5 months) but I did get a call from the dealier with some solid facts about why it was taking so long. He seemed upset that I called Dodge, so maybe they have some leverage with the dealierships. PS - tell em your gonna trade it in on a Dura Crap or Powder Poke unless you get satisfaction and it seems to motavate them. Worked for me...

I would try a different dealer to see if they "brush" you off too.

9-11 EMPTY?!! It doesn't take a rocket scientist or a certification from the government to tell you something is DEFINITLY wrong with this truck. My 95 12valve auto with 3. 54's gets a consistant 20mpg, and that's driving 70 and bombed. I wouln't jack with these guys. I would do like Sky said and try another dealership. If that doesn't work, take it to Cummins. So you have to pay out of your own pocket for something that should be warranty work. In the end, it'll probably pay for itself in that it might actually get fixed without screwing something else up. Saving yourself aggravation has to be worth something.

rednut , that is typical from the dealership , if they don't have a clue you get the "OH THAT'S NORMAL" line of BS . go to another dealer and see what they think , not checking the timing is silly on their part .

as far as giving the DC customer service the line " WELL I'M GOING TO TRADE IT ON A BRAND X" that may work in for some but when i used it with a problem i had with my 98 gasser the twit on the other end of the line gave me the "WELL WERE SORRY TO HERE THAT ,HOPE YOU COME BACK TO DC IN THE FUTURE" . if he was in front me i would have choked the crap out of that snot.

How’s the power situation. Seems to me that poor fuel mileage would = poor performance. I say go back to the dealer and complain about poor HP/performance. Just my . 02 worth.

I went back and read your posts, and notice you said "city" driving. We all try to be precise, but the terms we all use mean different things to different people. To some, "Highway" is 80 mph on wide open road, to others it is cruising at 60 to 65 mph. My "city" driving has long stretches of 45 mph and less than 10 stoplights encountered all day - my mileage goes UP compared to Freeway driving at 75 mph! But if I was hitting 30 stoplights and running the AC, I bet my mileage would drop under 14 also. So, here's the good news: To see if you really have a problem, you're going to have to take a weekend vacation!
You need to find someplace 400 miles away that you've been meaning to visit, and get out on the open highway. Keep your speed under 65, unless you need to go faster long enough to pass someone or to prevent creating a traffic disaster. Pick gas stations with pumps on level ground, and fill the fuel all the way up the neck, before, during, and after the trip. Take your time - keep going until you see fuel, not just foam. During the trip, check your odometer against the mile markers over a 10 mile stretch of freeway. Do this odometer check two or three times, and take the average. If there is any inaccuracy then multiply your mpg by the same correction factor. If you do all this and you are still getting under 18 to 20 mpg (4WD) or 20 to 22 (my guess for 2WD), THEN you will know you really have a problem. I know this is a lot of trouble and will cost you $$ for fuel and maybe even Motel rooms, but if you do this one of two things is going to happen:
1) You'll KNOW it is the city driving killing your mileage compared to others, but at least you'll be happy with your truck, or
2) You'll know, and I mean really KNOW, there is a problem with your truck.
P. S. - If it turns out to be #2, then I agree with those that said find another dealer or pay Cummins. Once your truck is fixed, if you are still mad, then demand DC reimburse you for the $$$ you spent and write nasty letters about the incompetence and poor Customer Service attitude of the dealer who couldn't/wouldn't fix it. But don't go on being unhappy with the truck!
GOOD LUCK!
P. P. S. - If you are married, don't tell the wife WHY you are taking the trip - tell her you've just been dreaming of a little get-away. #ad

RedNut, if the dealer still dont want to work with you, (assuming you find that your mileage is still not up to par), mention the better business bureau, and it may light a fire under some asses.
I'm going through a similar thing with my wifes Mazda, and they make it so that you want to give up.
Theyre very good at passing the buck.

I went the "poor performance" route with mine. My dealer gave me the phone # for the Bosch pump service center, and after I made the appointment they handed me an RO! I got my pump turned up, my timing adjusted, and Dodge paid for it! My mileage went way up as a result.

Rednut, get the trip - take the other 1/2 (suprise her!), check the "events" for this weekend (20&21), goto it and check out the other rigs. Give the other 1/2 a dindin and who knows #ad
#ad
- maybe all the problems will find a solution. Even if you pay Cummins, it'll save you in fuel over the 300k you will get on the eng. #ad

Is the dealer a 5-star dealer? If so, try complaining to DC about the quality of their 5-Star dealer. Mention that dealer in particular and say that you think a 5-Star rating is just an advertising gimmick because of your problem(s) with them. Say that you are going to contact all the news media help desks ( The ones on TV that report on problems and try to correct them)> They don't want bad advertising! If that doesn't work, DO contact the media!
