ATF 4+.... Conventional or Synthetic?

smarty updates

I know I guy who has installed a 120 or 150 HP chip on 2004 that has no upgrades, just stock. I told him he better get ready for the big meltdown. He laughs and told me everyone he has talked with said it's OK. He drives the heck out of this truck. I don't know anything about the third gens. How long and how big is this going to be or is this even a concern? Bunyan

I think the main thing he needs to worry about is his transmission, if its an auto, your right, its only a matter of time before it dies. If its a manual it may last longer, but eventually he will need a clutch. This is assuming whatever chip he is running doesn't have several settings and he is running the higher ones...

They can run pretty hot stock. With an additional 120-150hp he will likely cause some damage if he has no gauges. Dropped valve seats are a common problem on the '03-'04 trucks when subjected to too much heat. Also, some power-adders make more heat than others. Just depends, I guess.

A stock auto won't put up with too much over 100hp before having problems.

I don't know what make then chip is. He has the 6 speed manual 4wd. I know what temps I can reach with my setup and its not much. I installed the muffler elimination pipe and it has helped some. He loves to pull heavy loads and third gear dumps. I can't see some one spending this kind of money and driving blind.

Third gear dumps on a stock clutch with a stock truck will will kill it in no time... . let alone with another 100+ horses. When his clutch is toast tell him to call South Bend.

I also have heard about and agree with the 100 hp rule. Below that you should be ok if you drive with some common sense even with an automatic. If you go over that and drive with your head in your a** you better have a thick wallet. Just my . 02 cents.
