Friends,

I bought last jug of Walmart DEF in Maine day before yesterday. I checked seal, which was in place, so thought I was good, but turned out not so. Went to pour into motorhome yesterday, but noticed there was no smell when I removed the partially glued seal. Sniffed closer and no smell whatsoever, so decided not to ues it. I believe someone bought the DEF, used it, filled with water, glued the seal back on, and returned it to Walmart.

I returned to a Walmart near Boston today where they gladly refunded my money. I told them the story and asked if they coul put a warning across the Walmart network and was told that capability doesn't exist. I didn't challenge the answer as I had received great customer support.

It's just sad what lengths folks will go to to lie, cheat, and steal. Now, when I go to buy DEF jugs, I'll pull the seal and check before purchasing. Just more reason to buy bulk at a truck stop.

Anyhoo, buyer beware.

Cheers, Ron

You should have put a couple drops on a hard surface in the sun and seen if a white residue ended up there.

I guess zero aroma on a fluid that ALWAYS sets off my sinuses with normal handling was a major red flag. Besides, no sun as rain in the Norteast past few days. And, just to make sure my sinuses weren't lying to me, I opened my MH DEF tank and there was that normal ammonia odor.

Thanks for the thought, though.

Ron, you really should buy at a truck stop, I always fill there no problem real simple stick nozzle in side of the truck took 4.5 gallons closed to empty.

Could be Diesel Truck haters, like pouring sogar in tanks back in the day.
Now pouring water into a DEF system makes more damage.
We all know that these environmental terrorists do bad crimes, maybe that's a new scheme.

I guess my point of returning the product was to raise a red flag at Walmarts to this criminal activity. My first order issue is screwing up my DEF quality, setting a code. and starting the engine derate timer. Bad DEF can cost several thousand dollars in repair costs, plus when traveling, another several thousand in personal costs (lodging, food).

John,
I'm afraid you're correct. After getting my refund, I went to see if they had any on the shelf and they did not. When I left, there was no tag or special handling I could see. It was still on the counter, but the rep could have left it on the counter for someone to deal with.

For everyone's benefit, I like carrying a jug of DEF with me since last big trip hitting a truck stop that was out of DEF... just a safety measure when traveling.

I have a jug I bought before leaving Palm Springs CA in April I will be returning to Sam's Club when I get back this Fall as the seal was not in place. No Sam's in NW WA.

When returning an item like that, request them to mark package faulty or defective to avoid being put back on the shelf. I have ask for that to be done and if the associate refuses, I request a floor manager to be called. Then things get handled without someone else being duped! Need to educate them of what is taking place. I get strange looks when checking a package to make sure whats in it is what it's supposed to be!

Will water in your DEF tank actually damage anything?

It might damage it, but it could dilute it to the point it will set a code that starts the derate based upon unsat quality. To my understanding, this is not a code you can reset, the dealer has to do it. It's an EPA thing to keep folks from cheating and adding just water.

International and Freightliner med duty trucks having huge issues with malfunctioning DEF Quality Level Sensors causing irreversible derate down to 5% power. EPA had to approve Cummins to temporarily bypass the engine derate programming, but still requires use of DEF. EDIT: The DEF QLS sensors used on the mentioned med duty trucks were having 6 month backlog for parts and now down to 3 weeks. Those dealerships have avg 3 week backlog of work. 6 weeks would suck.

I think the hard code for poor quality DEF and the automatic derates that requires dealer involvement is why DEF is such a critical issue and problem. I even bought a DEF refractometer to periodically check it. I forgot I have it, but the fact DEF had zero ammonia odor was enough for me to not use the DEF I mentioned in this thread.
