I did a search on wandering steering and all I came up with was the problems with the 4x4's. Mine is a 2 wheel drive with about 110000 miles on it and the steering is really starting to wander , it is especially bad empty, not so bad with some weight in the back. Has anyone had any problems with their 2 wd's? I have seen some members have went with Borgeson steering shafts-more so in the first gens- do Dodge have a bad factory steering shaft? Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem in my '95 at about 120,000 miles. It needed a new Pitman arm & Idler arm... not cheap either. My front end guy could only find them at Dodge, and I think I paid over $500 for both plus installation plus new alignment. But it DID fix the problem! I then later got the DSS and that helped also. Now she's straight as an arrow with no wander at all.

Have someone turn the steering wheel slightly back and forth engine off while you look underneath for play in all of the steering components. Pay particular attention to the large nut that attaches the pitman arm to the steering box shaft, it shouldn't move back and forth.

A DSS might solve your problem but will for sure prevent the inevitable wearing out of your steering box. I would also try replacing the steering stabilizer, you can pick one up at any auto parts for under $40.

I have the same wandering problem now

it drives me crazy, i put new idler arm and steering stbilizer on didnt help and all other parts look ok but ya never no

whats this DSS?

Thanks Jared

A trick when reading a long thread like this one for the first time is to go the bottom of the first page and click 'show printable version'. When the page comes up click 'show all posts on one page' at the upper right.
