if you have been thinking of removing the rear spacer blocks or just relocating them to the top of the spring pack [can reuse the u-bolts then] do yourself a favor and go to the hardware store and stock up on 4x 4. 5"x1/2" bolts [grade 5 minimum] and 4x 1/2" nyloc nuts... if you are lucky, the factory bolts will come out easially [i was not:(]...

[rant] i would like to smack [read kick in the nads real hard] the engineer who though it would be a good idea to use round head bolts  [/rant]

i had one of my bolts come out with vicegrips on the round head, but it destroyed my vicegrips in the process [actual vicegrip brand ones] by stripping off the teeth on it. for the rest of them, i found an easier way to get them off [and it ended up being quicker than having to regrip the pliers when they slipped, and was much less frustrating]

i took my die grinder with a cutoff wheel attached. take grinder and slit the top of the bolt where the nut is as far down to the spring as you can go without touching the spring [cutting the nut in the process] then hit it with the impact gun spinning off the nut or breaking the last bit of where it was ground down to make it easy to get off... i was going mad until i decided to cut them off that way...

and don't start doing this when the forcast is showing a high chance of rain [i got just as wet as if i went swimming with all my cloths on :{]

i'll get some pictures of my pliers and the factory bolts when i get my camera back to show you wanting to do this what you are up against ;)

Trade you u-bolts for repairing the drain on the bath tub. Put wrench on pipe and it broke off. Got to wait until tomorrow for parts.

Nick post a picture, I want to see want the truck looks like with 315 tires and the blocks (spacers) removed. Did you lose the launch shudder?

I have einstalled a set of hellwig 3500 helpers (less one spring) and didn't have any trouble with the oem bolts. guess I finally got lucky. Hellwig didn't have a kit for the 04 so I revamped and older mounting kit. If anyone wants some pics let me know. I was dissapointed in the capacity of the oem 3500 springs, my 98 & 01 2500 held more weight. But if you're wieghing in a 10k probably have to add something.

i never had the launch shudder to start with [at least i never noticed having it?]and i haven't driven it around much yet...

i'll take some pictures later today of the truck [won't be clean though :(] and some of the mangled factory bolts and my mangled vicegrips

Nick... clicked on your link and this is what I got

"We're sorry!

The Webshots page you have requested has either moved or no longer exists. "

Well, I'm probablly the first guy to have removed the spacers, tried it out for an month or so and then reinstalled them.

Puchased a three horse GN trailer and when hooked up to the truck empty, the truck was level and the trailer was level, (this is before I loaded 3500lbs of horse flesh, hay, water, saddles, camping gear, etc. ) so I felt like I needed just abit more rear suspension travel, so I put the spacers back.

How long did it take you to complete the project?

the pass side i finished in less than 45min as it was the second side i did. the drivers side took me a little longer [needed to find my cutoff wheels and mandrel for my diegrinder] and it started pouring rain just as i had the axle dropped and was starting to [try  to] loosen the factory round head bolts so i tried to keep out of the rain. i'll say it took me about 2 hours on the drivers side, then sitting around inside the house for 4-5 hours waiting for the rain to stop, then another 45min to get the pass side done

Dealer Estimate

I have been trying to get around to this project for three months. I asked the dealer to do it and they said they would on a T & M basis with an estimate of up to 3 hours. That's about $250 at their labor rates. I think I will make an appointment.

Firestone Air Bags

With the spacers removed will the reduced travel affect the operation of the air bags. I am concerned about the ride quality empty.
