Found a fix for 6L

Links

I know you guys from Canada can help with this one:

I'm looking for a 4cyl diesel engine that will mate with a modern gas 4wd/rwd trans such as Toyota ,Nissan,Isusu or Mitsu pickups.

I want it to be 2-3 liter in size, turbo preferred.

all the used Japanese engine importers tell me that all the diesels go to south America and they have non,(if you ask what do you need it for anyway..... its to repower an older jeep).

any help and contacts would be appreciated

PS: If anybody knows where I can get one in the US please let me know!

not an import engine [and not so modern], but i've seen many bread trucks, older fedup trucks and some other small delievery trucks with the 3. 9bt under the hood with a th400 gm trans mated to it... that would/could work...

Every now and then I see a diesel Scout in the yard that still runs. Body of course is just about gone. Have to keep an eye out. Check this link out. Look in the "Mailbox Markets" and the classified ads. The mailbox is updated weekly. Been kind of busy lately so I am not following the ads myself.

I know where a small 4 cyl diesel is with a 5 spd hooked to it and still in a car. Non turbo. Its in a Lsuzu I Mark. Around a 90 model or so. It could be boughten cheap. It is located up around Tulsa. It would need a rebuild. Hit me with a PM if your interested.

Thanks everybody!

I considered both the cummins 4 cyl and the olb nissan 6 but both are too big,too heavy and have too much torque(the TDR gods may strike me for saying that)for my little 1600 pounder.

the Isuzu Imark will work but I need a runner as the price of the rebuilt is probably prohibitive(I know,I would complaint if they hang me with a brand new rope!!)

I was afraid somebody was going to ask this question... you will probably disown me and throw me off this board.....

Its not exactly a jeep... . its a jeep like vehcle made far,far away in the land of no return... . ok its a GAZ 69,if anybody knows what it is you get a red star... ... I'm planing to use only the body of of it,mount it on a jeep frame that I can get locally..... If you done anything like this in past please let me know!

never seen one in person, where did you come by it? If you are using a different chassis anyway I would use a 4bt + nv4500 and a pair of stout axles. Aproach a local sprint car or the like builder about making a chassis for you to the specs of the equipement you are mixing together. You will be suprixed at how cheaply they can make a full frame for you and it would even be the right shape for both the running gear adn the body.

Sounds like a fun project anyway

Ted

Ted,that setup sounds great..... but did I mention I'm married with little terorists??beside,I don't need anything heavy duty like that, after all its just going to be a weekend toy to cruise around in,it will never see any rock crawling sessions.

The coming story is very interesting, there are at least 3 for sale, maby more,(not advertised)in CA,they were captured (liberated) in 1967 by the IDF,used until the mid 70's and sold as surplus, the guy who purchased them brought them to sunny socal where they been siting since, there were 8 of them to begin with ,since the old man passed away 5 years ago his son been selling them off,(not shur to who,but there are 3-4 left)

As you can imagine they been siting dormant for close to 30 years now,so the only thing that is usable off of them is the body

as it suppose to be rust free Iwill be seeing them in sept... ... if you think Im insane I will agree with you,but I wanted one since I saw then 20 years ago for the first time but the old man refused to sell at any price(things have changed obviously)... ... ... ..... Joe

I'm drooling at the thought of a 4 cyl turbo diesel with a 4500/D300 and a set of waggy 44s on a YJ frameOo.

I wish I could afford to put a diesel in my TJ:(

Have you considered the VW TDI? It's designed for a FWD vehicle & is only 1. 9L but in stock form puts out ~90HP/~150TQ, with moderate mods ~120HP/~180TQ & with crazy mods ~150HP/~250TQ. I know that the older non-TDI VW diesel are a popular swap in Samurai & the like vehicles & those engines were positively anemic in comparison! Something like 50HP/90TQ :(! There was a very nice Samurai/VW diesel conversion for auction on eBay recently.

Good luck.

240D M-B, or maybe event he 5 cyl 300D engine. If you can find where they all went (lots of old folks take them to AZ and FL to die) they should be littering the junkyards. Most coupled to 4 spd for 240, auto for 300.

We have a guy from Kelowna BC over on TDS with a Lada Niva powered by a turbo'd 240D with the MB automatic (!) behind it. He seems to be a serious off-roader, and guesses that he is getting about 150 HP from the old Merc.

Guys,I did see the vw/suzuki conversion on ebay couple of days ago..... looks interesting(beside. I never liked the 1. 6,even in the rabbit it was too much car for the motor),on the 240d motor, there are plenty here in the bone yards, dirt cheap too, however to made it work with the 4wd is not easy, the only way (short of getting a g-waggen trans)is to us a divorced t-case out of a Nissan p/u,but I don't think that setup will work in a short wheelbase vehicle(rear drive shaft will be about a foot long???)

quatro setup out of junked audi with a VW TDI bolted to it, Audi sells TDI quattros in europe, just not here, the TT has a quatro setup and it is short enough to be a donor vehicle, but the parts will be pricy since people are putting the drivetrain under golfs and newbeetles here since they use the same floor pan

also older A4 audi's have a fore and aft engine, not transverse, so if you could get that drive train, you would be set

in fact, all older audi quattro models use a fore and aft engine, lots of 5 cyl inlines in that car line here, bet a VW diesel out of an old Volvo diesel would bolt right up

so do subarus, but I do not know if you could come up with a diesel to fit a subaru drivetrain

Eric, not a bad idea..... yet it don't have a t-case therfore no low range, also there is no way to make it work on a solid front axle as it has half shafts for the front wheels, btw:if you are to mount the volvo/VW 6 to a quatro trans you will need about 2 feet of overhang in front of the axle due to the lengh of the motor and the positioning of the trans to the front wheels... ... ..... There was a place in tampa Florida, Truck Recyclers, or such. Advertising a wide array of Isuzu 4 cylinders. They did not have any Cummins 4 cyclinders.

I think that a lot of those Isuzu delivery trucks that have been around for the last decade are being traded in or wrecked. HP is listed from 120 to 170 depending on the model.

Keep meaning to take a drive down there, just haven't saved up enough money yet.
