My '03 seems to take much longer to get to full operating temp than my '01 did. Once it gets there it is steady and doesn't fluctuate - just takes a long time.

Anybody else seeing this? I am thinking my T-stat is not closing fully or something. Currently 40-50 degrees.

It takes a little longer than my 00 did but not that much. About the same temperatures here too. I don't worry about it.

I have noticed that my '03 takes much longer than my '96 did. I'm operating in the same climate as you.

Like Ischultz, I don't worry about it either.

Plugged in or not? I have been plugging mine in every night. It's been in the mid 20's to mid 30's here. Yesterday was a crazy 62  But I think mine warms up faster than the old 01 when plugged in.

I haven't plugged mine in all winter and it has been down to the single numbers. If it is anything like my other CTD's it will throw heat sooner if it's been plugged in.

Mine takes about seven miles at 40 degrees. I had the scan tool on one weekend and the temp sensor was steady from ambient up to operating temp.

According to my wife it takes forever to warm up. I would say it is about 10 minuets before you can detect any heat coming out.

This thread is taking 2 different paths. The question was how long it takes to get to operating temp. That is the reply I gave. This is totally different than the truck giving heat.

My 03 gives heat when plugged in long long before the 01 ever would. When cold say 40 and below I start the truck, go in the house and grab some coffee (2 mins) then leave my house, drive 12 blocks thru 3 stop signs and 2 stoplights. Get on the interstate and before I can get up to speed I have heat. With the 01 I would be twice as far on the way to work. But the 01 never did kick into high idle when sitting like the 03 does.

To get to operating temp of what I see as 190 or 200 degrees it takes from the 114th street entrance to about 60th street. However far that is. 3 miles I would guess.

FYI when I had the scan tool on I observed the following.

Gauge did not move off 140 until the coolant temp sensor read 140, the next line up was 155 and the temp stabilized at 190-192 about one or two needle widths from the 200 mark in the center of the gauge.

The point, the gauge follows the coolant temp sensor exactly.

I was going to verify the oil pressure gauge, but could not find the sensor in the ECM, PCM or cluster, which seemed kind of strange. Not sure why DC left that sensor out.

What program are you using? I have a OBDII scanner but just have not hooked it up yet. I wondered if the oil pressure gauge was really a gauge or just a yes/no sensor. My old Impala SS was the yes/no style. Pretty cheap IMHO.

I drive 10 miles to work in the morning and it is not up to temp yet. It is about 165-175 aprox. One thing that I have noticed is my first gen was warm when plugged in upon startup. I mean melt the frost warm. My 03 is not blowing anything warm for 4-5 miles and not really warm by the time I get to work. When it is warmed up it will cook you out though.

Mine is toasty warm in the morning after the espar preheats the

engine and cab interior 1/2 hour before I go to work. -20 to -30C

degree temperatures are not uncommon here.

I was able to use a DRBIII. From the way the gauge works, it appears to be a sensor. If it wasn't raining tonight I would run out and throw a DVOM on the sensor to see if it is a switch or sensor.

GUYS!

I have the 03winter guards in the classifieds in the member basement area. they bolt on over the honeycomb and help warm up the truck faster.

Another rick I do is plug in the truck and start it up, and in about 3 min. the truck coolant is up to 70 deg. so you get lukewarm air in one min.

E-mail me if interrested in the winter guards
