My 93 has always run on the second mark on the water temperature gauge. Just recently, I had to replace the water pump with a rebuild from Cummins and I also replaced the thermosat. The new water pump does not have aring on the impeller plades that the old one had, adn the old thermostat was a 165 but I did not check to see what the temp on the new thermostat is.

Currently, the temp gauge has move up from topping out on the second mark to running from the second mark to half way between the second and third marks. I run with little load, maybe up to 500 pounds in the bed. I just turned 190,000 miles.

What I also noticed is when I am running at 80+ mph, it tends to run hotter, but if go slow around 60, then it runs a little cooler.

After driving for about 100 miles, I got out of the truck on checked the cluthch fan and the fan spun easily and the temp gauge was on the second temp mark.

My question is whether this is probably just a higher temp thermostat, or if the fan clutch is going bad?

Since I usually drive the truck in the boonies, I want to get thsi resolved before I get stranded

Thanks

Sound;s like a combo of both to me my old truck use to run between 2nd n 3rd mark's when running fast but that was normal cause I never went slow

Temp Woes or ?

Like you I just changed my stat and pump and noticed a marked climb in running temps but no overheating troubles. Techs have told me in the past that we get better miliage and performance at the higher temps so I have not worried about the change. My stat had 192 deg. stamped on the body.

Mine has been running fine now for 5k miles.

Yes you want to run at 180 to 190 for best performance and efficiency.

165 is too cold.

You probably need to check the temp with a IR thermometer to see where you are running.

Sounds like you put the warmer T Stat in to me . Mine is running abit warmer now also, but I think that is because of the cooler weather and the fan clutch not kicking in now . . tied in with the T stat trying to close a bit because its so cold around here now... by our standards anyway !
