Warn out front tires!!

The front tires on my 98. 5 2500 4x4 ISB are wearing on the outside only. This is after rotating them. I took them in for an alignment and the guy said the front end had to be bent, which he did, but their still wearing. I have 65K miles on the truck and am wondering about new shocks (I still have the originals). From reading the shop manual. their is no camber adjustment, right??



Iv'e got about 28K on my Michlin AT's and their trashed (only on the outside!!). .

Seriously though, what do you drive like?? What kind of PSI do you run in the tires?? Do you drive around loaded or tow often?? A load in the bed or a trailer will change the caster which will effect the tire wear and the way the truck drives.



If you haul alot of wieght in the bed and/or tow often you should measure the truck hieght at all four corners and have the truck aligned at that hieght. Might take some work to find a shop that will do that but ya gotta do what ya gotta do. What they can do is use straps to get the truck down to the desired height on the lift. Its a PIA but it works.



You should see how the alignments are supposed to be done on mercedes and jags ETC. Some of them require a brace with a certain number of PSI applied between the front two tires. All to help simulate driving conditions which cannot be done with a stationary vehicle.



I guess before you maybe go through this trouble is anything besides tow adjustable on the 4x4s??

I had a simular problem when I first got my truck and they ended up replacing the steering knuckle on the drivers side so it would align correctly. And I got a new set of front tires out of the deal. They still wear a little extra on the outside in the front so I rotate every 3500 with the oil change, I have a compressor and air tools so it is free.

My guess would be parking lots are doing it... or drive way... .



Lots of load on the front tires turning sharp into parking spaces.



I've got 37,000mi on the ones from the dealer... I do little parking lot driving... tires still look like new...



Oh yeah... I drive it as hard as I can afford to! (fuel prices being what they are! )

I would look for another alignment shop. I have over 56000 miles on mine, and plan to leave them on for a 3000 mile trip in a couple weeks. Will change them before snow. (Hopefully!) Ray

actually they can get a Cam that will allow it to rotate and adjust Camber with it. I think Moog makes one. I also believ the truck has it on it from the factory, but am not sure without looking at my new truck. they adjust using a hex head socket.

My new cooper 255/85's are doing the same thing... after about 5000 miles I rotated them and not too bad since then. I always figured a fairly open tread pattern with a tall skinny tire, and my driving habits were at fault. I wonder if I should check the front end?
