This is a WARNING to people using the SUV LIGHTS sport headlight wiring harness:

Noticed this morning that the inside bulb on the drivers side was very dim. Swapped the relays & same effect. Figured I'd swap drivers & passenger bulbs before I went & bought a new headlight bulb. Unplugged the bulb in question & found the problem.

The way the wire coming out of the back of the plug "hangs" it allows the wire to cut into the plastic housing of the plug. Looks like I've been loosing ground and it's heated up considerably.

suggest that everyone using the SUV Lights harness check ALL of your plugs for this problem. Im going to be zip tying all of the wires in the "neutral" straight back position as soon as I get finished typing this. Hope this helps someone!!!

In a bit

Planning on doing that this morning.

ALSO, just so everyone knows, Im not bashing the SUV lights harness. It is an EXCELLENT product that I am VERY satisfied with. I would buy it again in a second. I just need to correct this one small problem. Other than this I cant find anything to complain about.

Replacement

Emailed SUV lights and they were pretty quick to reply. I covered the 5 bucks shipping, and they're sending me a new 9007 socket & pins set. We will see how a new socket, some wire ties & some di-electric grease take care of the problem.

When it happens again (if?) go to autolumination.com and buy some replacement ceramic lamp connectors. Companies that replace a melted plastic with another plastic connector aren't IMHO doing anything!

If

Im hoping it wont happen again. Im going to zip tie everything up in a neutral position and throw a little extra dielectric grease on it and see what happens.

Thanks

Craig

Good luck! If you do find you need, send a PM and I'll get you the info for autolumination. They make all the standard healight sockets and others in ceramic. Out of 20 I've had one with loose contact faces - which I could easily correct by disassembling the plug (they screw assemble!!). I figure if I can burn out ceramic - I deserve too:eek:

Wow! I'll check mine, thanks!

When I installed mine, I didn't remove the batteries to mount the relays to the fender, I just let them dangle. "I'll do it right later... " After 3 passenger side relays failed due to corrosion, I zip tied them to the battery carry strap flange.

Not SUVLights fault, all mine. Do it right the first time!

Now the passenger side....

Well... just a bit of an update... Looks like the passenger side is doing it now... . Going to email suv lights and see if I can get another replacement. Dont let this stop you from doing it though... This is still a VERY worthwhile mod. I wouldnt change it for anything.

just when I wanted to do this mod. I think I will cry now!

Definitely don't let this stop you! It's just one instance of a problem on a part that must be on many folks' trucks. The Sport lights are great, and the improved harnesses make them better in 2 ways - eliminating voltage drop at the lights via the factory wiring, and lighting all 4 bulbs on both low and hi beam! If you don't want the SUVLights harness, get the kit from Daniel Stern and build your own.
