Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Has anyone tried this??

Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) need new lift pump

Has anyone gotten warranty (Cummins) work done after having aftermarket parts installed... i. e. , exhaust, turbo, Edge... I took mine in yesterday after it popped a 216, and the service guy called this morning and told me that Cummins isn't honoring their warranty if aftermarket parts have been put on. I'm thinking my lift pump is on the fritz, and I want to try some preventative things (relocating lift pump, new lines, etc. ) to keep my VP44 alive, but if I have to get work done, I want to know if Cummins will honor their warranty or not...

1. You don't have a "Cummins" warranty. You have a "DaimlerChrysler" warranty on the Cummins engine. DC purchases engines sans warranty from Cummins and assumes the warranty obligations themselves - it's a risk management decision. If they can save 2% or so on every engine, they figure they'll come out ahead financially in the long run.

2. If you have a P0216, you may indeed have a dead lift pump (you DO have a fuel pressure gauge, right?), but the damage to the VP44 is probably already done. P0216 is a timing failure in the VP44 and usually signals the imminent death of the VP44 injection pump.

Warranty repairs after mods is always a crapshoot - but the one MOST likely to get a rejection, is mods done to the fuel system - lots of high $$$ parts and labor there , and DC doesn't often pass up an opportunity to NOT cover that area for warranty replacements.

Sorry...

My P0216 code doesn't show up with the on-off-on-off-on test... that pulls up at 1693, I took it to AutoZone yesterday to see what was buried, and it pulled up to different P0216 codes, both saying injection timing malfunction... took it to the dealer, they got to it this morning, ran their test, said that the LP is still good and that that 216's won't clear and have been in the system for a while... could the Edge box have anything to do with that? I pulled it off before taking it in, but they did ask if I had put one on... dealer then told me that if it does need work done, they (DC/Cummins) will know if one had been put on... is that true? My fuel pressure gauge is supposed to be here tomorrow, I know I waited too long, but I'm trying to make up for that... . Dealer is doing the LP relocation, we'll see how that works out

I wouldn't want to hold out false hope, but I have set the 216 code twice due to driver error and subsequent engine abuse while towing - the codes disappeared after several engine running cycles, no later problems, and the last of those incidents was well over 2 years ago - and yes, I have a Comp, and it WAS in use at the time.

Hope you come out as well as I did...

Did you pull the EZ off before taking it in? My Vp-44 was covered when I had my EZ running on the truck... . But I removed it before taking it in, and they never asked, so I didn't tell... . I did still have the 4" exhaust and gauges on it when I took it in... .

Oh and like someone else said, the warranyt comes from Dodge, not cummins...

I never took mine in - I figured that morally, once I had deliberately modded the truck and VP-44 by adding the Comp, my warranty was void and I was on my own in case of failures. I don't much like being the VICTIM of fraud - and so I don't try to trick the dealership by pretending my truck is still virgin when *I* know better!

Yeah, I know, it's a character flaw of mine, and I guess all I can do is live with it... ;) :D

My vp went out and the dealer replaced it, but I had also removed the ez before taking it in. I checked the fp after they replaced it and with the ez and 275's i could pull it down to 0 at wot with around 8 psi idle reading. I asked the dealer if they had checked the pressure and was told they no longer go off of pressure, they use volume and mine was ok. Long story short I bought a new lp and installed myself. Figured it would be cheap insurance on the new vp :) The tech asked about the ez because of the velcro on the fuse cover, but said he was cool with it as long as it wasn't on when it came in Oo. good luck

I've had great luck with my dealership. The first few times I just gave them a heads up to what bombs I have and after they got to know me I just pull the truck in.

They've done a lift pump and VP , and rebuilt the trans using DTT parts I supplied.
