Unreliable Turbo Diesels?

Went to the local diesel performance shop the other day to see about moving the lift pump next to the tank. My stock one is on its way out. Was told it wouldn't work because of the sophisticated electronics and pulsing and they wouldn't do it. Mentioned that I knew alot of people that had done it and as he walked away said "don't listen to those TDR people". I hadn't even said anything about where the idea came from.

By the way, the office had mostly banks power posters and the parking lot was full of Fords.

The shop local to me charges about +30% to double what I can buy for and that is NOT including install. I mentioned the gap and was told that "not all you guys are on the TDR, so some guys don't know". That is the LAST time I set foot there. Siss on those Pisters... ...

Look at it this way, there are 17,000 plus members here and we have done a boat load of testing and trying with just about anything to do with these trucks, a little reasearch here and there is more than enough real world results out there so YOU can makeup your own mind with confidence.

Cheers, Kevin

Sounds like he probably bought one of those new 6. 0 liters and doesn't want you to be able to fix your simple problems. :-laf

what i have found out dont take ur truck anywhere u can do it urself!!! its a big rip off they jack the prices up on parts and labor is just ridiculous! im not the greatest with tools but im learning really fast and with a good set of instructions and maybe a few questions to ask guys on here u can do anything!! if i have a question or something i go here first!!! cause there r tons of guys willing to help out on a drop of a hat for u and they have been threw it before to help walk u threw it!! everyone i have talked to on here has been awesome!!

Even if was going to take my truck to a mechanic he would have to be a TDR member. It's amazing how much misinformation some of these guys are full of, even ones who have been working on the 5. 9 since Dodge started using them in '89

or maybe we are all missinformed and the 6. 0 is the most tested engine on the planet, banks makes the most power and lift pumps never go out.

Yeah, beware, stay away, use garlic and religious symbols!

WE ARE TOTALLY MISINFORMED!

Now to that LP relocation. I discussed it quite a while with Rod. He talked me out of it. He's pretty sure that his fuel line upgrade kit will work just as well. It's not the banjo kit. These are real fittings.

I'll report what I see when they get here. Right now I can bounce the needle off "zero" under WOT with the box cranked up. It's fine with just the 3's.

Boy were they right! All these lift pump problems, it's all just a big joke to run EVERYBODY with a 24v's post count up. Besides that, Cummins doesn't think the KDP is a problem either, that's just a way for people with a 12v to get their post count up also. :p ;)

Andrew

You are right about doing your own work. I usually do my own but wanted to go camping next weekend and so really wouldn't have time to do it myself. I did searches on this site on all the LP fixes so that I would be armed with the best information. With all the thousands of good folks on this site spending all kinds of time to research technical material and R&D work you can't go wrong. Thats why I just walk out the shop without wanting to argue with him.

What might have set him off is he might have overheard me mention to the parts lady about my new turbo from Kurt sitting on the dining room table (don't want to get it dirty keeping it in the shop!!). He probably has told all his Ford customers that his work would guarantee no Dodge would outrun them.

WadePatton, I would like to hear how fuel line upgrade goes. I am going to buy another stock pump and just take it with me on the trip. About 4 days ago my pressures came back up to normal and have stayed there since.

TDR members are too loud, too rowdy, too knowledgeable, and have way too much fun at our rallies.

We know too much about which aftermarket companies give good parts, high value, and good service.

We know too much about our trucks and their issues/problems, and how to get these things fixed.

Better not talk to us any more

Oo.

Joe, I wish that I had gotten this advice along time ago. Then I would have been spared the pain of meeting up with Fred Swanson. How many of us have had to see the whole underside of our perfectly good trucks laying on the ground in pieces. The transmission being torn apart and then put back together with all kinds of strange parts.

Then you hear "those injectors look sickly. Why not try a set of these new HEALTHY ones". And while we're at it just stick this little black box on the dash!

Once everything is back together you have to endure "The Test Drive". Wide open throttle runs where you say this is the reason they put these cushions on the backrest behind your head!

Build boost, let go of the brake as you floor it and listen to the four rear tires squeal for mercy. The HORROR of it!

I think there was hypnotic suggestions done in the process, because for the last 2 years I've found I have to repeat "The Test Drive" on a weekly basis.

Thats it, I'm not listening to you guys anymore because there's a new turbo on my table from some guy named Kurt that I have to see if it will fit under the hood.

That's right!

We're a bunch of power perverts! We howl at the moon! We'll force you into adding power to your truck! Stay away!!!! :D

azpete, watch out with that turbo from Yardley, 'cause at first you have to do something like this:

#ad

and in the end it'll look something like this:

#ad

and then you'll be all Oo. :D :--) Oo. :D and the furd and chubby guys are all :{ :-{} :{

And about the overcharging thing... do you guys know that it is a $5500 deal to do a full swap-out DTT transmission? I about shat myself when I was given that quote! Course, mines been done for almost a year now, so it really didn't matter... the shop however couldn't do just a billet upgrade for me though... weird, huh?

Josh

The auto repair industries worst enemy is a knowledgeable customer. The Cummins shop in San Leandro, Ca quoted 8 hrs to swap the exhaust valve spings. Others try and BS u into believing their line crap. The TDR keeps everyone informed and we aren't all continually 'reinventing the wheel'.

The best way to keep your truck trouble free is not to take it to most dealers or repair shops. If you have to make sure they know what they're doing. Researc first here go there and if info doesn't match go to another shop. Info here has always been right on and saved me lots of time.

I blame TDR and the guys here...

for my '99 having permanent FP and EGT gauges and a EZ and straight exhaust!

It is all your fault guys that my little 3500 smokes black and will pull anything it is tied to at 70mph! Oo.

When I get my new 3rd gener, it will get gauges and DD 1 injectors before it is broken in! :--) Oo.

Stop it now, I say!:D :D

Smoke on!;)

BTW... if my lift pump gets relocated, it will be y'alls fault too!:D

whats a 70mph? just drive by the egt gauge, keep it below 1500* most of the time and you will be fine.

Its all TDRs Falt

  Tea its all TDRs fault that I have been spending so much money on my truck lately. All the info I get here is right and up to date. The only problem I have with my CTD is that dam lift pump, I would love to shove that thing up some ones a$$ for such a stupid set up. Just put new LP on las night and I still have the same fuel psi reading, 8-9 psi at idle and 6-7psi wot what is up with that.

Other than that CTD best thing out there, let the smoke and the money roll, I don't mind speeding my money on the best set up out there. Oo. Oo. :D

yeah, people tell me not to listen to you guys:D I definitely do not listen to them. For example, this week at college, a guy tries to tell me stuff I know, he won't let you tell him anything he drives a 3500 w/flatbed,straight pipe couple doodads, cant remember 12 or 24v. I'm not sure about the first thing but it sounds funny to me

He's like" Watchoo dun to dat truck" I proceed to tell him my mods. It don't help that he thinks he knows everything.

1 He's got the fuel leaned out on his truck:confused: He says it makes more power? I'm not sure about this one.

2 when I get to my smaller exh housing, he's like "no you aint supposed to do that" I'm like:rolleyes: hoooobooooy He proclaims that the 92's were the last year of the high performance turbos:confused:  He wants to buy one to put on his truck:confused:

a H1C !! in place of a Hx35(or Hy) that is definitely wrong in my book.

I hope that I do not get to the point where I don't let anybody correct me.
