hey guys. i have a 98 12v short bed 4x4 4. 10 160k 315/75/16's. my question is concerning the transmission or torque converter. its really annoying when im accelerating and i hit an incline and i have to push 2000-2500 rpms just to keep accelerating or maintain the same speed; anything less eventually results in rapid decreases in speed and eventually to a crawl. also, if im parked on a hill i have to rev up to 2000-2500 just to get the truck to move or it will sit there or roll backwards. overdrive is my fastest gear, as soon as it kicks in the revs drop down to 1200 or so and its like all this power is unleashed. it feels like the transmission or torque converter is wasting all the power the engine is making. if something were "tighter" i guess the truck would be so much faster and i would burn alot less fuel. is it just the stock torque converter that needs replacement? do i need a torque converter lock up switch so that ever gear will be locked in? is it something entirely different? i know there are alot of posts on this subject but it seems to have to do with towing most of the time which i dont really do. sorry this is so long! thanks!

If you run it with a locked converter, you risk breaking parts. The autos are not designed to be treated that way.

Talk to these guys, they have it figured out!!

I tow with the torque convertor locked up all the time. I try to avoid shifting with it locked up but with billet shafts I can get away with it.

transmission temp runs about 150 degrees towing 9000 lbs with the TQ locked up.

Slip sliding away?

I know your pain!!!!

Get ready to spend money... ... .

I tried the inexpensive route and ended up spending more than if I'd just done it right the first time.

Call each of the Transmisson guys that advertise here on the TDR.

Be sure to communicate your expectaions.

Do you want to aviod stacking? Be sure to tell them.

Get a ride along in a truck that has a similar power level that has a built transmission.

A truck with more power will act much different than one with less.
