I got a problem. My waste gate is leaking boost all the time. It sounds like it isn't closing. Any ideas what can cause this before I go in blind to tackle this problem? Thanks!

Check that the line going to the wastegate isn't disconnected or damaged. The area above the exhaust manifold is prone to melting. Disconnect the actuator from the wastegate and check that it opens and closes freely, sometimes carbon deposits can bind it. If you have compressed air connect it to the actuator and check that it expands and contracts, sometimes the actuator diaphragm can tear. Do not exceed 30 psi to the actuator or you can tear it yourself.

Had to replace the actuator on mine. I put 20 lbs of air to it to test. Bellows was blown. Buy the part from cummins vice dodge. You will save.

Goober,

Sure could. This was without any mods to the truck. I used to get 24 on boost and could do that in 3,4,5 when I got on it. With the actuator problem I was seeing around 18/19. Two real noted differences were that I could not get boost as fast (not real obvious, I think mine got progressively worse) and the second was towing. The truck just would not pull hills the same, couldn't hold on the same hills and couldn't accelerate as well.

Thanks. I always though mine was acting a bit.

Just installed the boost guage a few weeks ago and best I can get WOT is about 17 lbs boost.

I also got the same problem pulling 6K trailer up long hills. . no guts, no glory.

One more question.

Did you notice a change in a loud resonating noise, esp at 2k rpm?

thanks

Goober,

With the auto (180 hp) your max boost would probably be about 21 vice my 24 on the manual (215 hp). My truck has resonated for a long itme at 2000, don't remember when it started.

You will want to check the rest of the intake system before the actuator. Check the cheap stuff first! Likely you have loose clamps or loose bolts on the intake.

With my '95 I only got 17lb boost even with a higher HP cam plate -I understand that is the way it is set up at the factory.

I put a c-clamp on the boost signal line and get 23-28 now. Better power and cooler EGT when pulling!

How do you know it's leaking boost?
