I've been searching this forum alot and learning alot, but could someone please explain what the wastegate does? why some turbo's have it some don't? thanks

Wastegates are for releasing boost pressure. Once the vehicle gets to a certain level the wastegate lets any "extra" bleed off.

so in reality on a stock engine it's not realy going to hurt anything by blocking it as long as i have gages? and keep egt's below 1300?

In the words of Charles "Boss" Kettering:
"Parts left out cost nothing and create no service problems".

Using a wastegate allows the manufacturer to size the turbocharger for fast spool up and good throttle response without reaching excessive boost levels and/or exhaust back pressure. It costs more money and adds complexity, but the alternative (different turbocharger) is less satisfactory across the operating range.

Building more boost than you can use (you said a stock engine) just forces the engine to chase its tail -- using exhaust backpressure to build intake boost in the absence of additional fuel isn't doing anything for you...

The wastegate on these turbos doesn't "release pressure", it bypasses the exhaust stream, or some of it when the correct boost pressure is reached. bg

If you have a boost gauge, just block it off. If you dont have a gauge, I would not recommend it. Dont exceed 35psi with the stock HX35 turbo, and dont boost over 20psi until the engine is warm, especially in the cold weather.

good luck. .

you say don't go over 35psi? with new gauges this is what i get. 22-25 if i get on it in a lower gear and climg up to 65 mph, but lets say i'm going 50 and floor it, it'll go to 35 psi (wierd). even when i sledpulled the last time it never went over 25.

also i might add that my afc is FF, my fuel plate is home ground 10 plate, star adj. only smokes when going slow and floor it. or if i use my lockup switch (holy smoke :) )
