Last year, using my Edge EVO HT Tuner, I set the power level to Economy mode before embarking on a 10,500 mile jaunt around the USA, towing my 4,000 lb. travel trailer. My Edge Insight CTS2 Monitor showed no unusual temperatures nor pressures for the entire trip. Earlier this year I made a 600 mile loop trip to AZ and return towing the same trailer. Shortly after leaving San Diego eastbound on I-8, and while driving up grades in the mountains, the monitor started sounding an alarm while displaying high MAP readings of approx 43. Am I correct in thinking I have a waste-gate problem? If so, how do I diagnose it? Except for a cold air intake, a muffler delete, and an auxiliary fuel filtering system, the truck is a stock 2006 2500HD Laramie crew cab 2wd. Your thoughts please.

What Cold air intake have you installed? Have you ruled out a failing MAP sensor? Have you checked for any Codes with a good code reader?
I would google MAP sensor issues on a 3rd GEN 5.9L Cummins truck and see what is posted.
Just my $0.02

You may want to clean the MAP sensor... dont remember cleaning process, maybe alcohol. Sometimes oiled filters can leave a residue on it, causing problems.

Cheers, Ron

If you’re reading MAP absolute pressure then it’s probably normal, as 43 absolute is only 29-30 psi of boost at sea level.

See what it reads with the engine off, it’s probably 13-14 depending on elevation and ambient pressure. If so then I’d turn the alarm off and keep driving.

Computer problem and social schedule prevented me from replying until now. Nice to have the box working correctly again.
So...
Jim W - The cold air intake is a Banks with a K&N filter element inside, recently serviced. No codes show on the Edge Insight. Will check the MAP sensor.
Ron - I will search for a sensor cleaning procedure. An oiled sensor is a possibility. It may be that my filter oiling procedure could be improved.
John - I did such a test recently, and found no abnormality here at ~ 400' above sea level. I set the Insight alarm to sound at 46.2.
Thanks for the replies, gentlemen.

Cloudmaster,

You may not like this, but I would ditch the K&N air filter and see if some other filter media may fit in the Banks Cold Air intake. The K&N air filters do not have a very good reputation for diesel engine use! The K&N filter design does not trap enough dirt particles even if oiled, to protect your engine and the following problems can cause damage to the turbo and engine. The compressor wheel could see pitting of the blades do to contaminates passing thru the filter. The MAP/MAF sensors if oil is for the air filter will trap oil on the sensor, thus providing false readings. Dusting of the engine can occur due to high contaminates being bypassing due to the air filter efficiency, entering the engine and scoring of the cylinder walls.

The K&N air filters state that the filter filtration efficiency is between 96% and 99%. Were as the OEM Fleetguard air filter has reportedly a 99.99% efficiency rating. The filter design still allows the OEM air filter to support up to 400HP+ requirements on the fourth gen trucks.

Do a deep dive on the air filtration requirements for diesel engines to see what I mean. Also do a search on TDR for more information on the use of K&N air filters for our engines.

I would start with the air filter replacement and clean the MAP/MAF sensors first. Operate the truck for a while and then see if your issue still persists.

Just my opinion.

When the discussion about K&N filters started years ago I was running a K&N filter. I kept it clean and oiled religiously. When I checked the tube running from the air box to the turbo there was an oily residue on the inside of the intake tube. I wondered what was coming through with that oil residue??? I went back to the OEM paper filters and have had no problems since and I run a lot of off-road/off-pavement in dusty conditions with no issues with the OEM paper filters. You may very well have oil on your MAP sensor.
