Went to look at 02 w/ 70000 mi. yesterday. Owner had hose off intake and had sprayed either to try to start it before

I got there. He thought it could be out of fuel and added some from a can he had in garage. I cranked it and had some vapor at exhaust. I then opened up fuel drain and fuel there smelled bad, then took out filter and fuel in bowl looked milky but filter wasn't black like they are when I've changed them.

My questions: what damage has he done to injectors, fuel pump, injector pump?

Would all injector lines, injectors have to be pulled and cleaned in addition to the tank?

Truck in good shape, what work to do to get it running so I can make him an offer?

Thanks

That doesn't sound good! I don't think it would hurt the injectors necessarily but it could easily trash the injection pump. If you had crud like that in the filter canister then I would be getting the tank cleaned. After that remove the fuel filter and clean the canister out. . . leave the filter out and disconnect the fuel line where it enters the injection pump. Put the end of the hose in a container. Bump the starter and let the lift pump cycle to flush til it comes out clear. Then I would put in a new fuel filter, connect the fuel line, and loosen all your injector lines at the head. Bump the starter trick 3-4 more times to help clear what's in the injection pump and lines. Tighten the lines, then cross your fingers and try firing it up.
