I think the bearings are out in my water pump. The pulley wobbles when I had the old belt off (which it apparently trashed) The new belt wants to ride up on the edge of the fan pulley and I think its because the water pump pulley wobbling. What do I have to do to fix this??? Bearings or a whole new pump???

Hey Wirenut
Too much smoke makes the pulley wobble, better put it back to stock. hehe
A rebuilt pump is the best way to go, prolly impossible to find the bearings and seals and then they have to be pressed in and hope its done right and doesnt leak.
Good Luck

If the bearings are real bad, the shaft is not true to the block. The shaft will be on a slight angle and this will force the belt to try and run off the pully.

As the pump is pretty simple and easy to replace, my choice would be to replace it and not fool with replacing the bearings. If there is someone who has replaced the bearings only, lets here from you as to how things went!

OK Wirenut, here we go..... another reason why your Cummins diesel is the one you just have to love.
The pump is bolted to the front face of the block, with the impeller and bearing/seal in the water jacket. Just as a REAL diesel should. Remove the belt, the two bolts, and remove the entire pump unit. You can remove and reuse the pulley if it's serviceable. I'd not recommend fooling around with the bearing and seal. Drop in a new unit from Cummins, with real gasket sealer on the gasket.
The time might be right to replace the antifreeze/coolant anyway.
Have fun.

hey wirenut! The same thing happened to me in may. I was driving down the road and it sound like someone had tied a can to my back bumper. When I got out of the truck I noticed it was coming from the engine. I opened the hood and pieces of my belt were flying everwhere. Later realized that the pulley on the water pump was wobbleing which caused the fan to eat the belt. In the end I had to break down and buy a new water pump. That and the and the master cylinder are the ony two things I ever replaced on my truck.
