How can Geno's sell a water pump for $35, and one from my repair shop cost $300 ( from the cummins distributor)? Where is the $265 difference in manufacturing? Just venting... thanks!

They charged you $300. 00 for just the pump or was that with labor included???

That pump (3286278) from Cummins should sell for $150. 00 to $175. 00.

I know it takes time to do, but if possible get quotes from shops before authorizing repairs. You will be surprised at the differences from shop to shop.

Sorry that you had a bad experience, but one good thing is if it fails within the next year you should be able to go to any authorized Cummins facility and be covered for parts and labor on that repair.

If you are on the road a lot, it might pay in the long run in this instance.

If you'll notice, the water pump at Geno's is a Gates, not a Cummins. TDR member mwilson works for a Freightliner dealer and can give you their selling price of a Cummins pump. Most repair shops mark up the cost of parts used on a job. It depends on where the shop purchased the water pump, how much it cost, and how much they marked it up. Some shops may quote a lower labor rate for the local area and make it up on the parts. It's also possible the shop isn't famaliar with Cummins engines and didn't know the best place to purchase a replacement pump.

When the water pump on my '96 died I just ran to Auto Zone for a replacement, was like $40. That was over 100,000 miles ago, still on the truck.

theres another facet of this story-- the overhead of a repair facility compared to GENOs mail order buisness, the 30. 00 per hr service mgr (overhead) shop facilitys, tools, lifts insurance, ect(overhead) you dont have to pay for all that if you DIY (just have to ask your wife to get the grease out of your good shirt)
