A friend just changed his water pump and said there was a metal shroud of some sort that was installed with the old pump but it would not work with the new pump. He said it was conical with a fairly large hole. Sounds to me like a restrictor but I couldn't find any info in the service manual. Does anyone know what this is and if it must be installed with the new pump? He said the truck was running cool so I'm not sure what to tell him. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,

I replaced mine on my old 160 motor just befor I went with the 215. I noticed the same thing. The new water pump did not have this ring, but worked like a champ. Was wondering what that was myself. Mike

Before changing my water pump and all hoses last weekend I did a search and came up with the following posts. The original water pump that came out of my truck did not have the shroud/cone end on the impeller. The Cummins ReCon did have it. I asked the Cummins guy about it and he wasn't sure why it had the shroud/cone but it was an updated part. It must flow more water as my truck now runs about 140-145 where as it used to run 160-170. Also the weep hole was cast into the pump instead of just a hole right under the shaft. I'm thinking aftermarket water pumps may not be using this shroud/cone type set up? Napa had 3 different pumps, I didn't look at them, I just went with the Cummins, $98. By the way I asked Cummins their shop labor rate per hour, $93!!!
