Water Pump question

A friend just changed his water pump and said there was a metal shroud of some sort that was installed with the old pump but it would not work with the new pump. He said it was conical with a fairly large hole. Sounds to me like a restrictor but I couldn't find any info in the service manual. Does anyone know what this is and if it must be installed with the new pump? He said the truck was running cool so I'm not sure what to tell him. Any help will be appreciated.

I replaced mine on my old 160 motor just befor I went with the 215. I noticed the same thing. The new water pump did not have this ring, but worked like a champ. Was wondering what that was myself. Mike
