When removing the water pump, how much coolant will run out if I don't drain it first?

typing with one hand so bear with me,

you'll lose quite a lot, everything above the height of pump will come out. heater core, cyl head, rad, etc. 2 gallons at least.

i use a siphon hose down the rad neck and remove the coolant to just below the pump. that way you don't have to mess with the rad drain.

Mikes way will save dealing with the drain plug-that's a good thing. If you just pop the pump off it will take roughly 2 gallons

And you can get in there and replace it only removing the belt. I didn't even take the belt all the way off, just off the pump. It's a squeeze but can be done. I might have taken the airbox off though I can't remember.
