Hi guys

I think the water pump on the 92 is taking its final hoorah... noticed a little water last night down underneath on some oil pan bolt heads as i was doing a full service oil change... Today i warmed the truck up drove about 10-12 minutes to the store and back round trip, noticed what appears to be coolant coming from under the water pump area... now take in mind im looking at this directly over the radiator and it appears to be from under the water pump and following the casting outline and then down to the oil pan area.

There is so much grease/soot build up its hard to tell for sure, i called Oreilly's and they have a new pump in stock for $54 +tax, I was guessing over $100. The parts guy told me if i could see the weep hole and if it was wet then it was the pump, im wondering if it could be a gasket but he also said it was unlikely the gasket and this truck with now almost 110,000 on it is the original pump... How hard to change is it? To me it doesn't appear to be to difficult just if i have the right sockets for the job is all.

Thanks

Get the belt out of the way and 2 I believe 10mm bolts, zingo! I would get the pump from Cummins though, like I did with my 03 already. Weep hole is kinda hidden on these.

With some aftermarket belts they are a little tight and a real problem to remove/install. I found that if you remove the top alternator bolt and loosen the bottom and let it piviot it gives a little extra slack for changing the belt. It isn't hard to get the bolt back in once the belt is in place. Removing/replacing the belt is the hardest part of the job!

Thanks guys, i appreciate the info... . im going to pick up the new pump or if someone has a number for Cummins dealer, i think the closest to me in my state is Roanoke Va. but have no idea about the phone #

o-ring

I love this pump. Two bolts (12-13mm) 23-24 N-m (18 Ft-lbs) when putting it back in if you are anal like me... . I just did this Saturday, you would think I could remember. :)

The pump does not use a gasket, there is an oring set into a groove in the water pump. This one really is easy.

My 93 with 84 k miles was starting to weep. It however was not treated well with regards to clean antifreeze. The 93 with 84 k miles had lots more corrosion inside the radiator hose necks on the block than the 92 fleet truck at ~250k.

The 93 factory pump had an extra cone shaped disk welded to the impeller to direct the water better.

The aftermarket (I suspect) pump from the 92 was the same except it lacked the cone shaped ring...

I am curious how much difference there is if any when one is really pushing the engine.

If you ever need to go there, it's off the last Roanoke Exit heading north. Get off 81, and you're by the truck stops. Go to the light, turn right and you're heading south on US 11. Go past the trailer/RV lot and it will be the first road on the left. There's a used car lot where you turn in. The Cummins shop is at the end of the road.

Thanks Phil

I did get the waterpump replaced, i did have a little trouble with the inner bolt but was able to get to it with a boxed end 13mm wrench which my neighbor had, other than that it was a snap...
