Buying used truck, what to look for?

Last week I made an appointment to have the water pump recall done, it was suppose to be tomorrow. Dealership called this morning to cancel the appointment due to water pumps on restriction again. Not concerned about my water pump but why the new restriction?
I sure miss my nephews not working for Fiat/Chrysler anymore.

I've been told the same by the only two dealerships within 75 miles of me. One (a low volume truck dealership) couldn't even give me a time frame, the other which has probably 100 diesels on the lot said fca is only releasing one pump per week to them until further notice. By the time I got on the list I had over 50 people in front of me.

This is FCA at it's finest.....:-laf I stopped at the local dealer two weeks ago, got a different version of the same story....figured I'd worry about it later.....Driving past the same dealer on my way home a couple of days ago, I thought what the heck, I have some time to waste....... stopped and spoke to a different service advisor.
No problem she says, bring it in this coming Monday and we'll get it done......we'll see....

When I got mine done at a fairly high volume dealership a couple weeks ago I was told they get 14 per week or per month cant remember for sure now which. I had to wait a week got in and got it done. Aside from my low coolant light coming on within one minute of starting the truck which I drove right back into the garage and they topped it off with what appeared to be about a gallon and the messy job they did draining the coolant seems like they just took the pump off and let it drain that way based on the mess of coolant all over up front. Once it got dried out, burned off and the smell went away it has been fine.

My current dealership is a low-volume dealership and they told me they send three in to get three back but now the water pumps are on restriction.

With thousands of truck to service with new water pumps it is going to take a while.

Oh I understand that, not worried about my current water pump. The more miles I can put on the current pump I'll have a new free pump to replace it. It's more about an updated pump and now on restriction. If it was just production being slow is one thing but I take restriction as not releasing.

Restriction is a term they use for a shortage of items. "Aisin's are restricted in SRW" saving them for duallies. This has happen several times. They asked about mileage when I got my appointment. Like they are installing them on higher mileage trucks first. SnoKing

This is correct. Think of "restriction" as "rationing", NOT as "another recall".

I'm going to do another inspection on mine this weekend, pop the belt off, check for any play in the bearings and rolling resistance. If I don't like what I see the Geno's pump will go on otherwise I'll just keep monitoring it periodically. It's not like they just fail out of the blue.

And, if this is the current production pump for the current production 6.7 all over the world in every application.....

When all you 4th gen guys get your water pump fixed, what ya gonna talk about?:D

Having just returned from AZ towing my 5th wheel, I called my local dealer yesterday to schedule the water pump recall.

They said they have plenty of pumps and scheduled me for Monday morning, 4/23.

I do live in a large metro area so maybe that's the difference.

Yet we can buy the same pump from Genos, something doesn't make sense. Genos has them as we speak, but not the dealers ?????

If Geno's was requesting untold thousands of pumps per month, I'm sure they'd be put on restriction too.

Also, I'm not certain how the distribution system works but I am pretty certain a certain percentage of the updated pumps have to be available outside of the fca umbrella.

Yes, and production needs some as well so the line doesn't shut down.....
