Just drained my water separator. How often should you do this and based on what? miles, gallons, time?

I probably do it after every 3 tankfuls. Have heard weekly, every oil change, lots of answers.

Also, my procedure is to open drain valve, turn to run 5 seconds and I also bump the starter. Is this too often? is bumping the starter ok.

Thanks.

From the 2010 Ram Truck Diesel Supplement:

"Caution: Do not drain the fuel/water separator filter when
the engine is running. "

"Drain the fuel/water separator filter when the “Water In
Fuel Indicator Light” is ON. Within 10 minutes of vehicle
shutdown, turn the drain valve (located on the side of the
filter) counterclockwise 1/4 turn, turn the ignition switch
to the ON position, and allow any accumulated water to
drain. Leave the drain valve open until all water and
contaminants have been removed. When clean fuel is
visible, close the drain valve by turning it clockwise, and
turn the ignition switch to OFF.
If more than a couple ounces/milliliters of fuel have been
drained, refer to “Maintenance Procedures/Priming If
The Engine Has Run Out Of Fuel” in “Maintaining Your
Vehicle” for further information. "
