After my last mods I find that when pulling, aprox 13,700 lbs, on uphills maintaining aprox 60mph, 1750rpm, in overdrive, egt at between 11 and 1200 water temp begins to climb. Is this aprox the normal. I relize that this is easily rectified by slowing dwn or shifting out of OD. and this is what I do but I am wondering if my cooling system need attention. Rad front does not seem to be blocked, fan appears to be functing normally. I have been changing the fluid every 1-2 yrs. Has anyone used the Royal purple rad additive with any results?

Last mods : added progaurde 7 air, magtech rear end and trans pan, 110hp injectors, BD torque convertor and valve body.

have you checked betweenthe rad and intercooler? do you still have the vent bottle in the original location? if yes your rad can be plugged with oil and other crap. other possible problem is thermostat, they have been a problem on early trucks. hope this helps

Have the vent tube router to bottle just under front bumper. Changed thermostat lst year. At that point thought it may not be opening quickly enough but it did not seem to change the temps. I take it that others do not see any increase in water temps when under load? Will plan on hitting the rad today with a citrus cleaner before heading out for Newfounland tomorrow Although the rad looks clean.

Lots of guys looking at this post. How about relating your experience re temps. Do yours rise at all on the hills?? at between 1100 and 1200 EGTS?

The question is how much does it climb? One would expect a rise in temp during a hard pull.

My 1st gen hardly ever climbs beyond normal, but runs on the high side of normal when hauling a load uphill.

My thermostat failed twice, once the rubber came loose and second time the yoke broke on it. I noticed my temp. going to the middle of the gage or a little higher last year when towing the 5th wheel and changed the thermostat again but that didn't solve the problem. I haven't towed the trailer this year but drove the truck yesterday, if I get up above 70 mph for just a short period the temp. will climb to or slightly above the center mark, back to 70 and it drops to the 180 deg. mark so I still have something not right????? I can't see any obstructions in the radiator. Would the fan clutch cause a overheat problem at highway speeds? bg

Well, mine is going in this week for new front brakes and I am having the shop pull the radiator and clean it out. I have been running over 190 degrees since the start of summer, and that seems to be just a bit hot for me. The last thing I want to have to do is replace an engine because I got it too hot!!

I will let you know what they found out.

Much appreciate the response. It helps to know that this seems to be a more common occurance though not necessarily normal? I've never pushed the temp or it has never risen beyond the high normal. Easing back does bring it back down to low normal. eg needle to the left of center.

That was the way mine was... ease off and it moved down. Here lately it has not been doing that; hence the reason for the clean. I hope that takes care of the problem.

Mine has always settled out at about 191-ish at 70mph unloaded, even if I push it to 75 or more it settles about the same spot. Right after I let off it, the temp falls to 187 or so. As far as I know it's normal.

checked the radiator before pulling out from Fredericton to Malagash 9 Near New Glasgow NS on the North Thumberland straight. Looks clean but there is really not any space between the incooler and the radiator to be able to check or clean. Pulled well, temps here under 70f . No overheating and needle stayed below the center all day. Did not push the hills, dwnshifted to amaintain EGTs below or at 1100. Great day.

When my truck was stock I had the same problem after 4 years of towing a 13k 5th wheel. I had changed the coolant every 2 years. When I took it to a radiator shop the radiator was plugged at more than 50%. After rodding the radiator it ran at 190 degrees while pulling a long grade.

Several years later I added a chip and 4 inch exhaust. Now when pulling a steep long grade I have to watch the rpm as if gets above about 2300 rpm the water temp starts to climb. If I back off to 2100 rpm it will run over any hill at 40 mph and will not go above 190.
