Just in time of the dog days of summer, watermelon season is in full swing here for the next 2-3 months. While our region isn't one of the top producers like California or the south, they are touted to have the highest sugar content in the country ( so they say).

I'm not particularly crazy about watermelon though. I don't care for the flavor or gritty texture. But, are you a melon lover? ;)

Back in college - it was common to have a 'melon that had a hole drilled in the top which allowed it to be filled with "happy juice".

The 'virgin melon' is okay - nothing I'd go out of my way to get my hands on.

Ditto on that! Does anyone else grill their corn? We soak it in cold water for 20-30 minutes then put it in the grill. We very lightly brown one side, turn it, brown that side then enjoy. You need heavy plastic gloves to dehusk it when it's steaming hot. Add butter and some seasoning and enjoy.

Slurp

Love watermelons, if any of those mentioned above are better than those raised around Nixon Tx. I probably couldn't stand it. bg

microwave

We just throw the whole ears, husks and all in the microwave around eight minutes for four ears. Pull em out and the husks just about fall off on there own. MMMMMMMMMMM. :D

Now that sounds GOOD! I gotta try this sometime, that's gotta taste a lot better than watermelon, even those found in Nixon, Texas! :p

temperatures around here have been over 100 for the past week or so, and when it gets that hot I don't like to eat that much, I have found myself buying a couple of slices of watermelon to eat at either lunch or morning break.

Give me a couple slices of seedless watermelon that has been iced down and a salt shaker and get out of my way!!!

Oo. Oo. Oo. :D :D :D

Corn is always a real big seller for the Amish around here east of Lancaster, but it was so wet this spring, the first crops are only just starting to hit the road side stores. After having corn picked earler the same morning, the stuff you buy in the stores just don't cut it :p

Best way is to pull it off the stalks, run to the house and cook it the way you like it. Drives me crazy when my wife eyeballs the corn from Florida when it first appears in the market.

We're sitting in the 100s until the middle of next week, but I'd rather grab a cold lemonade and something lite instead of sitting down with a watermelon & salt shaker.

Salt shaker??

It was 98F at lunch time today, thank goodness the coffee shop had sliced some up and it was in the cooler... ... ... .

had a date with the salt shaker and great lunch today!!!!!!!

Gotta Love Watermelons!!!! They would not have the Watermelon Jubilee in Stockdale, TX one weekend, and the Watermelon Thump in Luling, TX the next!!! Talk about Watermelon everything!!! And, on top of that, you get to see some of the great Texas music artists perform! So yes, I love watermelon!

Always hated watermelon for eatin' purposes.

LOTS of fun for shootin' purposes though... :D :D :D Also great for firecrackers and other explosive experimentation. With high enough velocity bullets, it is easy to prove that watermelon has a vapor state... ;)

lmills,

Don't know about the "Irene" scene, but I remember farmers joking about how jealous a teenage boy could become of his watermelon patch, they recommended that you try to find seedless watermelons if at all possible ;) :p
