Ok guys, heres the quick version.

Front seal went bad, so while changing it I decided to change the timing cover gasket at the same time. While we had it all out, figured now is as good a time as any to advance the timing. I had a guy on the timing pin on the pump. He said that it went in, but apparently it didnt. Not knowing that it didnt I went ahead and turned the shaft. When I went to start it up, NOTHING. White smoke so bad it reminded me of a pothead pulling bongs, (THE WORLDS BIGGEST ONE). I cant get this damn thing to start for nothing. Obviously the timing cover is back on along with all the stuff. We pulled the oil filler tube, and attempted to retime it just back to stock, but to no afale. Could I have just turned the shaft one to many times to get it back around to the stock timing spot? What have I done wrong?

TIA

Russell

I would start by marking TDC on your harmonic balancer then open the cover for the pump timing and find the indicator. The two should line up when at the stock setting.

See my post in this thread for more detailed instructions.

First off, I ASSume you have all of the proper tools to properly time the pump (i. e. dial indicator and holding fixture, delivery valve removal socket, and pump gear puller. I like to find REAL TDC and not rely on the timing pin. Its known to be inaccurate because its movable on the timing cover. I do this by turning the engine over with a barring tool in normal engine rotation direction until the exhaust valve begins to open. Stop turning the engine at this point and tighten the intake valve adjuster to zero lash +2 turns on the #1 clyinder. Now turn the engine in the opposite dirrection VERY SLOWLY in the opposite direction until you feel the piston make contact with the intake valve. STOP rotating the engine. You should see the valve movwe upward slightly when this happens. Mark your balancer using a fabricated pointer or scribe next to the engine speed sensor. Now rotate the engine in the opposite dirrection SLOWLY until the piston makes contact with the intake valve. STOP. Mark your balancer again. The short distance between these 2 marks is your actual TDC. Measure and mark this location on your balancer. Loosen the intake valve adjuster 2 1/2 turns. Rotate engine in normal rotation while watching the intake valve open and then close. Keep rotating the engine until you reach you TDC mark. You are now at the compression stroke TDC for #1 cyl. You can now adjust the valve lash on the #1 intake rocker arm and are ready to set the pump timing. Rotating the engine in normal rotation direction while watching the dial indicator in the pump reach max lift and then going back down to zero lift. Stop. Zero you dial indicator and rotate engine again until proper lift at TDC is reached. Stop rotating and lossen pump gear from pump shaft. Clean pump shaft and gear with brake cleaner to removeoil. If there is any oil left on the gear or shaft the timing will likely slip. Rotate engine in normal rotation direction until compression TDC is found for the #1 cyl. Tighten down your injector pump nut to proper torque and reassemble engine. Rotate the engine and check your work to see if the timing stayed in proper positon. If all's well put her back together and you should be ready to go. Hope this helps.
